Wonder 10 build

Postby cdlwingnut » Fri Nov 04, 2022 2:53 pm

Ok I pulled the trigger and brought home a harbor freight 4' x 8' trailer. I have 3 custom size windows ordered. I have also been collecting bits a parts for the build.
I plan to follow the plans pretty closely for layout B, the one with the double bed in the back and a table/bed in the front. it a few ideas for how to make the table change to a bed and some storage ideas. I will try to keep a build journal here.

Welcome! :D

I'd be interested in seeing what you have planned
and what you end up with. Do you have a weight
budget you need to meet?

The plan is to use layout B. the weight limit is the limit of the harbor freight trailer. the plans say I should come in well under it. and my own calculations using the shipping weight of the materials I plan to use indicate I should have weight to spare if I keep the build light. I also plan to skip the dropped floor, I know this will mean not being able to stand up strait but I think it will feel less confined and be simpler and stronger without it.

is that about 6x10, a 1 foot overhang all around?

according to the plans it is 6.5 feet wide so about 15 inches of overhang each side of the trailer but only about 9 or 10 inches outside the wheels. the plans say that's a bit of overhang to be careful towing in high winds.
I am also kind of toying with the idea of using the shape of the widget6 but the rest of the plans for the wonder 10. this way I can get a more aerodynamic shape, not have to lengthen the trailer by a foot, and maybe gain a foot in length too. just an idea.

The materials have arrived, still waiting on windows but should be enough lumber to keep me busy for a while.
Thus it starts, may the odds ever be in my favor

Been tinkering away, The supports for the floor was added I used 1x3 boards on edge. One wall was framed out on the deck of the trailer, they plywood skin was then glued and stapled to the frame. The wall is now up with some temp braces. I glued and screwed and stapled it to the floor and the bottom 1x6 boards that the plans have as the main strength.

The frame of the second side is starting to go up. seems to be working well building the frame first. We will see when it comes time to skin it though. I've been using pocket screws and glue to hold the parts together.

Looks great. I’ve been looking at that layout and like the layout. I’ll be following to see how it turns out. Is that 1x4 for the framing? What thickness skin is on the outside and inside?

it is 1x2 framing with 2x2 where the seams of the 1/4 ply skins will meet, I'm building according to the plans that can be found free on this site and other places on the web. Only a few modifications, i did not put in the drop floor, I did not put the axle above the springs of the trailer. and I gave it a couple more inches of height to stand in.
