5x10 Squaredrop build

Postby italianub » Sun Feb 11, 2024 2:50 pm

The build has begun! Had a slight delay due to my cousin getting sick, he was supposed to come do the welding, so instead I enlisted a great welder that lives nearby to make a house call. I learned a lot watching him weld so I should be able to weld on the fender supports and other miscellaneous stuff later on.

Next step is cleaning up the rest of the steel, primer & bed liner, followed by getting the suspension and brakes installed, then putting on the front jack.

I will be creating a youtube channel for my build and posting as I make progress, I'll include the link in my signature once I get the first video uploaded.

Good luck with your build. If you haven't planned on it yet, I would consider welded tabs on the corners and cross braces to bolt the floor to the frame.

Yeah they're welded on there already, however I put them about 4 inches from the corners and cross braces. I'm not entirely sure why I did it that way  but it seemed better as far as spacing when bolting the floor when I was looking at it.

The man is incredible! He'll be getting credit in the videos I make for sure. Fast and extremely reasonable for his time.

Which gauge did you use for the square tubes?

Hey everyone, I made some great progress in the last week - grinded down the mill scale & welds, primed, painted, ran electrical, installed front jack, suspension, brakes, tires and everything works! Huzzah.

Here's my first video of the build on youtube, but for those of you that don't want to watch, here are some pics.

Thanks to Tony and the folks on this forum for answering all my questions the last couple months!

What's the function of the tiny cross member near the rear of the tongue?

By the way, I much prefer the weld-on swivel jacks.

Something to consider.

I originally had the 1x1 on there before realizing that the a-frame center beam wouldn't be able to weld to it since it's not 3" deep! So we put in the 2x3 after realizing our mistake. So it's an extra support I guess :D

Been thinking of some way to utilize it but so far nothing comes to mind.

I am certainly considering it, the one I have on there is massive

Second build video is up, here are some photo highlights if you don't do the youtube thing!

I drilled the holes for mounting the floor to the trailer, 3D printed some spacers for my side-marker lights and installed them + wiring, installed the tow chains and did a test drive! I then started working on the floor - cutting the plywood and adding 3 coats of spar urethane with sanding/cleaning in between each.

Poor weather has delayed me from continuing the build the last week and a half or so, this video is a short one.

I started out by finishing up the wiring, wrapping the side-marker lights in conduit and adding in a spare wire to the junction box for future use. Lined up the floor on my frame, realized one side was slightly wider, so I took my sander and took care of that to make it square. Cut my 1x6 and 1x4 framework to length and glued one side, getting a bunch of weight on it. The last thing I did was see about putting on the jack stands, has anyone here successfully attached jack stands to square tubing without using a nut on the other side? I figure I am going to need to weld them on but if you know of a different way to attach them so they can be removed, please let me know!

Looking great so far. And it looks like it will be very strong. You could use rivnuts to mount your jack stands.
