A lot of old cars are poorly maintained, especially mechanical brakes, which most don't understand well enough to rebuild/bring back to original tolerances.
Once done however, they stop very well, and very fast.
My roadster has mechanical brakes, and stops well.
Once you add a heavy trailer though, it only makes sense to have trailer brakes, which I do.
A 6 volt brake controller allows the trailer to handle all the stopping needs for the combination.
