Any Canned Hams under 78" tall?

Postby Freddy the Element » Wed May 02, 2012 12:48 pm

Wanted a teardrop but I'm getting frustrated with the lack of them on the used market. Lots of canned hams though, with obvious benefits -- but I need something that I can store in my standard garage which has about 78" of clearance at the door. Can't be more than 13' or so feet long either. Are there any out there that are on the short side? Thank you.

Thanks, looking at photos of them they seem taller than 80" but I'll see if I can see one in-person . . . .

The Aristocrat lowliner had special wheels made out of plywood from the factory to lower the trailer even more to move it into the garage

Depending on how you measure it, including the tongue usually adds 3' feet. So you want a trailer that is 13' including the length of the tongue?

I believe the Metzendorf is 6' tall according to resources. Including the tongue will probably set this trailer at 15' guesstimate.

I know the trailers pictured below may be longer than 13', but I wanted to show them off just because I like the low profiles.

It's not a canned ham, and did not put a tape measure to it, but Eddie M. 1945(?) covered wagon may fit in a garage, a tad longer than 13'(?). The back door has a dropped floor that hinges down to the ground giving a standing area around the kitchenette. I should have taken pictures of the interior, because it is a really nice one!

One of my favorite 1947 homebrew trailers with dropped floor, again not a canned ham, but a little more trailer on the stretched length. Has a dropped floor that can be raised/lowered.

Or, there are a few fiberglass trailers like the Compact Jr., or Scamp, 1970's ish. I will have a Compact Jr. up for sale soon!

Photo not my trailer, but a good representation with the popped top.

Thanks for all the great leads, friends. Wish I didn't have so many restrictions (height, length, weight, tongue weight) and needs (80" bed). I think sometimes I am searching for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!

I stumbled across some short "Hi-Lo" trailers online, that could fit the bill -- not what I wanted, but might be a good compromise. Amazing how many travel trailers are for sale (as opposed to teardrops) and how affordable they are. It's fun looking, that's for sure.

Cuyeda -- let me know when you're ready to sell -- I MIGHT be interested and we're local to each other.

There was a forum that I found a trailer that a guy custom built for his VW-Bug

Also, not a canned ham, but it was designed specifically to fit a standard one-car garage. The box is 6-feet wide and 11-feet long. Interior headroom is 5-foot 4-inches.

Here’s a link to the ‘Tin Can Tourists’ classified ads that you might check from time to time. Every once in a while a good one shows up and is worth going after. :)

My 78 scotty sportsman just fits in my garage. The body is 7 feet wide by 10 feet long. Overall length with tongue is 13 feet 2 inches.
Earlier years ranged from 6 feet wide to 6 1/2 feet wide. Length was still 13 feet.

I still prefer a teardrop, but if one of these fiberglass models like a Trails West Campster or Compact Jr. come along, that will do nicely. I have an older style "slab" garage door still though that I don't want to replace (solid redwood!) and that lowers the entrance a couple inches vs. a modern roller garage door. I have seen people put bare rims on Bolers/Casitas/Scamps so they fit in their garage -- I will probably have to do that. With an impact driver handy, I could probably swap the wheels out in less than 15 minutes.

photos of any garagables please.
I would like to fit a rig inside my garage also. We have an association that does not allow us to park one outside.
We have a teardrop that we park in the garage. I could build some type of standie but would like to know what's out already.
