On demand water heater summary thread.

Postby dbhosttexas » Thu Aug 12, 2021 10:38 am

To summarize my on demand water heater plumbing and related projects.

I was trying to solve a problem. I REALLY liked the features of the Joolca HOTTAP V2 Nomad Kit, but was VERY uncomfortable with the cost, and would need to modify it heavily to fit my needs and sort of nullify the advantage of going with Joolca...

What I did was to create an Ensuite plumbing kit of sorts, using my shower head, barb x thread fittings and 3/8" ID hose giving me plenty of hose to have permanent in ensuite plumbing, with enough slack to have it act as a handheld shower. I have a splitter in line and quick connects, one side goes to the shower, one side goes to a sink sprayer.

My main sticking point to the on demand water heaters was the requirement for the BBQ tank propane when all of my appliances are white gas / gasoline, I wanted to use 1lb bottles, or a single 5lb tank. The 20lb tanks are too big for my comfort especially when I have to carry white gas... I guess 20lb propane would be fine in winter when I can switch to propane stove, heater, and use a propane lantern...

What products did I use and how did I configure them?

The heater is a Camplux 5L, and I use the Camplux provided 1/2 G thread to 3/4 GHT fittings and seals. No tape needed, but I used Rectorseal gas rated pipe dope just to be safe. I used standard garden hose quick connects that came in a 6 pack from Amazon, and 3/4 GHT male and female to 3/8" barb adapters. Hose clamps tie it all together, and coaxial cable waterproofing tape keeps the stray end of the hose clamps avoiding snags.

To split the water outgoing between sink, and shower, I am using a ball valve style garden hose Y fitting that I had laying in a flower pot. I bought too many years ago and figured I could put it to use. I have quick connects at every coupler, and have a 10' Camco 1/2" ID potable water hose with a garden hose sprayer doing sink spray duties.

At this poing, pumping is done with a 1.2gpm 12v pump, through a Camco 40043 filter rig, I am still working on sanitizing / cleaning below 20 microns. The idea here is that I want to shower OFF the dirty lake / creek water. Leaning more toward a bucket system. FIll 5 gallon bucket with river / lake / creek water, let sediment settle out, transfer the cleaner water to a secondary vessel, and add bleach drops to sanitize, and pump / filter from there for clean water to the shower or dish washing, although most likely keep potable water carried in from known good sources.

The gas line has a Joolca Gasknect quick connect, setup on the heater side, and a steak saver adapter to allow me to setup without using wrenches, AND use the 1lb propane bottles so I don't have to haul 20lb BBQ tanks. As soon as possible I will be adding the Flame King 1lb bottle and fill system with at least 5 1lb bottles. A single 1lb bottle can stash in an empty void here and there in transit. A 5lb tank would be a good option as well, but they are a bit spendy and not super easy to find... Not off the table though.

Anyway, so there it is, a messy post I know, as I continue to work through the project I am hoping to put my updates here, and include the results and even long term updates, does it really work as well as I wanted it to etc...?
