Oval-ish Barrell-style Vardo-ShepherdsHut-like Dutch TTT

Postby mezmo » Thu Mar 28, 2013 9:29 pm

Here is an interesting build from the Netherlands. He was inspired by Shepherd Huts
and wooden boats. Built on an old popup tent trailer frame out of pine boards/planks.
They look to be 3/4-1inch thick and not even tongue-and-groove. He built the two end
shapes, then ran the boards between them ~ to Vardo construction. 'Looks like some kind
of internal barrell hoops at each end and spaced about 3ft/1meter apart internally. He
waterproofed the roof with canvas and paint, with side eaves throughs and has short front
and rear overhangs.

Here's his website for it. It's in Dutch, but you can get the jist a bit if your translator
doesn't work.
Click on "The Making Of" and then click on the first pic. That'll bring up a viewer controlled
slideshow. Click on each of those pics and it will give you a very large pic you can Ctrl-/+ to
a size to better see details.

Looks Foamie adaptable to me.

Norm , that’s pretty much what I’m doing with the Foamstream , foam planks over round ribs ... mine just has a rounded nose ... otherwise not that much different .. It is a pretty standard construction method , mostly used in old Boats and aircraft ... The tube shape sure makes it Strong ...

Here’s a pic of one we saw a while back that was cool and pretty similar ... another Foamie' candidate ...

GPW - I did think of the Foam Stream when I saw it, [with your mentioned
exceptions] although I consider the FS a more sophisticated [in the best
sense of the word.] design. The 'plank method' does seem to be a very
'prototypical' approach.

And the "reclining cylinder" is a simple basic shape with strength
derived from its shape.

So, if someone goes with this approach, like they used to say in the
1970s - "Totally Tubular Man !" [Sorry - Just couldn't resist the reference.]

Cheers,

Norm , the only thing about the tube shape is it cuts down on floor space , and I need all I can get ... :o But that tube does make it possible to use on a narrower trailer...

Just saw a You Tube video on building a Birch bark canoe .... then started thinking ... Hmmm? a birch bark trailer .. Barrel style ^ would be perfect ... a bit unusual , just an idea if you wanted to go real “primitive” ... a little foam glued on the inside would make the bark just as stable (or more ) as the traditional cedar strips would ... and insulate it too , but in a trailer like that , might be more appropriate to do the inside in Bear skins ..... :o ...

Or just faux paint it to look like a birch log when done.
