Bolt on, removable foamie on 4'x6' trailer?

Postby kudzu » Fri May 31, 2013 4:26 pm

How big could I build on a 4x6 trailer? Am thinking at least 5x8 if I build over wheels. Could I go 6.5 x 8? Here's the deal. If I buy a trailer & build what I think I really want, it would take more time & cash outlay than I want right now with our myriad home repair/improvement items going on. And I've got all these ideas about what I think I want but am not sure what is really going to be the more practical to build or practical for use.

My bro-in-law has a little 4x6 trailer he rarely uses since switching occupations. Asked him & he will let me borrow it occasionally. So I thought why not try building a little foamie on a removable platform that we could bolt onto his trailer. Then I could borrow the trailer, bolt the foamie on & off we'd go. Is this crazy? If bro-in-law would let me keep it at my house then the add/remove process could be less often, assuming he really isn't using it much any more. My incentive to him would be to let him borrow my camper. He's been wanting one.

Also, later when I get my own trailer for the project I'd originally envisioned, I could just make the originally foamie available to bro-in-law whenever he wanted or perhaps even just give it to him.

OK, I've decided. Think I can make this work. It will be 4x8 as that simplifies things. And no building project with bro-in-law. Family peace takes precedence. Guess I need to try playing with Sketchup now.

Not a Foamie but it is the best example of a Teardrop camper that was intended to be removable. This is posted in the gathering section so only a few people ever seen it.

Wow! Junkboy that's an amazing trailer. My system will be less ambitious but that one is ... just wow. Thanks for posting. I'd never have seen it otherwise.

Wow terry that is cool.

Kudzu- my foam/ply hybrid is 5" wide on a 4" wide HF trailer that I had to modify rather heavily. Also extends over the front and rear of the frame by a few inches. I believe the entire teardrop minus the frame will only be a few hundred pounds less than three. A couple of strong guys could lift it off without jacks. It might be worth your time to check it out for some ideas. Build thread below. And if you find that you've wasted a few hours reading through my build thread I offer a 100% moneyback guarantee.
For those who would like to have a look I have a build journal and covet your feedback.

Kudzu, the one I am building will sorta be a bolt on I think, I'm not sure If I will be able to remove it but I am planning on trying. As they say in the radio business keep tuned for an up date later.
