"trucks" used cloth to make bumper

Postby pete42 » Sat Dec 01, 2012 10:00 pm

I was watching "trucks" on television this AM and they used a fleese robe to make a unique bumper he made 1/2 at a time right then left.
they used part of the old bumper for the attachment points but used 1/4 inch rod to make a frame work
then they laid the fleese over the bumper and the 1/4" rod frame work held on with office spring clamps
he said you could use spring clothes pins but the office type had more holding power he must have used 50 or more
started at the top clamped cut off excess pull tight clamp cut off excess until he had a tight fleese covering
he wanted an up turned lip using unwaxed dental floss pulled tight about 3 inches above the bottom side to side
clamped off he then used epoxy to lightly cover the fleese when it dried he removed the clamps sanded filled
in any defects when he finished it look very professional and very light most likely won't stand to much of a bump

Epoxy (or polyester?) over fleece is a very common technique used in making custom shaped speaker boxes and show car interiors. The material stretches in both directions (unlike other weaves), so it is easy to make forms for your hard points then stretch the fleece over and get unique compound curves. Resin, filler, sand, and paint.

I've also heard of it being used to skin over foam bucks for kayak hull construction; the specific material being available in marine supply stores, like West.
