canvas drop cloth without a seam in the middle?

Postby mikeschn » Thu Jul 16, 2015 4:33 am

I am looking for a canvas drop cloth without a seam in the middle. When I search for canvas drop cloths on the web, all the photos shown are in the packaging, and there's no clue if there's a seam in the middle or not. I am looking for the 9 x 12 size. Actually 6 x 12 would be fine too, but I haven't seen anyone with a 6 x 12 drop cloth.

Any ideas?

You will probably need more but when ordering less than 9 yds their default is to fold it; if you ask they will roll it. 10 yds and up will be rolled; less creases that way.

I got a great deal from greatduckcanvas from their clearance section.
No seams, super high quality. Mine is 7oz.

That looks good. Price is pretty good too, way better than aluminum!

It's actually cheaper than buying 6 drop cloths, the right size, at the box store.

The "Reaves" brand #810 Pro Heavy from Menards in the 12x15 size is seamed at 6' wide. This info may not help, but, just thought I'd throw that out there.

I had no idea it was seamed before I bought it. Had to rework my canvas plan or just end up with enough to do a second 5x8 TD roof which might not be a bad thing. It kind of forced me to forget about PMFing the walls. Glad now that that was the case as I'm loving the cedar paneling version. IT should look marvelous with the PMF roof painted an undetermined color.

All of the 9x12 Harbor Freight tarps I purchased for $16 ea had seams down the center. Was not quite wide enough to overlap the roof to sides (53 wide + 4" overlap) when the seam was cutout. I check to see how much material would be gained by undoing the seam but it only gave back about 1/2 to 3/4 inch. Ended up with roughly 52 inches of material width after washing.

Just from what we've seen , the drop cloths aren't as good a quality as the Big Duck products ... We've made several orders from the Duck now and am very happy ... the latest was canvas to paint on ... Nice uniform finish ...

:applause:  :FNP

HF tarps have many pulls, pills, and flaws of all kinds as you can see in my photos but they all buff out :R :R Worked fine for my build except for the roof compromise but it was ok.

I found some canvas for mine today and she's got two varieties for the same price. Ones the more traditional weave with the odd pill in it and the others a higher thread count diagonal weave style that's much finer in texture.
My question is if I want to see some texture but want it fairly even can I remove those pills after a few coats?...I fear the other stuff might get to smooth a finish and I kinda want the doped canvas ww1 biplane sorta look

You might have noticed in a few of my pix, the worst pulls & pills have a dab or two of TB II on them. That is so the canvas stays stabilized when I sand them off even with the rest of the weave, so we will find out. I will be using normal dry wall mud techniques to remove overlap lines and other imperfections, smoothing out the weave as much as possible on my build starting after the first primer coat of cement & block paint.

I see no reason why sanding off the pills & pulls should not be OK but never done it before. The TB II on both sides should stabilize any possible unraveling.

When you sand the pills off, I'm assuming that the underlying weave of the fabric is still in place, correct?
in other words, does this create a hole in the canvas?
