Nookery Updates -- 25 Oct Update. Working on the galley

My final scheme to attach the floor and help make sure it was square with the cabin (as much as possible) was to use drywall corners, drywall fiberglass tape and gripper. I measured, cut and attached the drywall corners to the outline of the canvas already on the floor. I overlapped the corners:



Then I finished the whole perimeter and gobbed on the gripper. It took forever to dry, as it's been hot (+95) and humid here for two weeks. Here's a shot of the floor:



And after everything was dried to my satisfaction, my neighbor and I replaced the floor on the cabin. It fits! Especially after I cut down that one corner I mentioned in a post above. I haven't glued it down yet, but maybe tomorrow.



I am so happy to see that floor fit. When I glue it down, I'll be putting in 4" deck screws to hold everything in alignment. I may leave them in the final finish just for added strength. My next post will be about the trials and triumph of Weldwood.

I thought I was buying what had been discussed in the big thread, different name though. It's a wood contact cement. Supposed to hold immediately. I think that only applies in optimal temps and humidity. I thought it'd be worth a try on the cooler drawer, so I bought the tiniest bottle I could find.



Did I mention it is hot and humid? The first try:



Failed. After three hours it wasn't dry. I pulled the pieces apart and decided to try again tomorrow (today).



I used a frame clamp today and really put a lot of the contact cement on the pieces. I left it clamped for several hours. It was better, but still had some give. I set the wood box aside and went on to work on the floor and other things on my todo list. At the end of the day -- almost 8 hours later -- the cement was finally cured. I will, I think add screws just to be safe.

Oh, and because we test everything. I put some of the cement on a scap of pink foam:

A no go for that use.

So, what else I have been up to, you ask? GG. Oh, yes, I have all sorts of things to try and do.

Last update for today is the internal shelves. The front will have three Ikea Thule shoe drawers mounted in a foam sip panel grid. One corner of the grid will host the AC.

I bought white GG just to try, plus it was a much smaller bottle and won't stand out as much after drying. The grid will get painted and such, but the less I have to worry about covering the better.



I used it and the corner clamps to glue up the grid. Worked pretty well, actually. Painting and trimming will come later, but it was a good day to glue stuff up.



So there you have it. Progress!

Coming along nicely ....

Bonnie , we never had much luck with contact cement used for gluing up wood like that ... Usually only good for gluing sheet goods material ... or laminates ... Apply , let get almpst dry , then press both surfaces together ... Tricky !!!

I'd use TBII or TBIII on that joint! The joint will be stronger than the wood.

More done today. I wasn't happy with my first attempt at wall repair so I. Did a do over.



Looks much better. I also glued the galley together. Still needs trimmed and a roof.

Bonnie, Interesting how this is coming along ....

Just curious , will adding to the back of the trailer require you to move the axle back a bit ... ??? It’s Light so maybe not , but as a galley that could add some serious “cast iron” weight huh? ...

After adding the 18" piece at the front, the axel is sitting at roughly the perfect 60/40 measurement. That was a happy accident.

Rained off and on today, so no progress to speak of. Still trying to fit everything into a very tight space. I am considering using open wire shelves in the galley to save a bit of weight. I have a bunch of bits and pieces on hand. That makes it thrifty.

For anyone wondering about foam strength -- those pavers being used for Gravity clamps weigh 7.5 lbs each. That's 60lbs of weight. The foam didn't. Dent or die. Strong stuff.

Bonnie , you know everybody else talks about foam being non structural , and yes , it’s not like Wood or Steel , but it sure is strong enough for our camper applications... It’s been how many years now and a whole Bunch of foamie trailers built , and no “structural” problems so far ....at least none of the problems forecast by naysayers in the beginning ...

Today was a hot super humid day. I sanded and space led the galley once I was sure it was trimmed and would fit in it's designated area:


And it looks like I managed to duplicate the roof angle pretty closely.

I also got the floor glued down to the cabin today!!!!! Well, it's drying and there's filling and sanding and such to do, but the little stinker is officially together. Woot!!



And so ends today's progress. Rains are moving in. I can work on the inside floor attachment tomorrow.
