I was thinking of something similar. I think I might try the foam with wooden edges, but also sandwich the foam between two pieces of 1/4 ply with the outer piece having about an inch overlap all the way around. Then just attach some weather stripping to the inside of that for a seal.

..we covered over the foam and wood edges with a heavy Kraft paper , then added the canvas and paint over that … 6 years and counting living outside ...
