I keep searching for foam sources ... the 2" X 4'X8' sheets are available ... just Not from HD or Loews ... Judging by the prices of the thinner materials , I'd think a 2" sheet would be somewhere around 30 USD... Prices seem to track the volume of the material ... So judging by that ... the foam for a Thrifty trailer construct (4X8 TD) should be somewhere about 100USD...
The 3/4" ply floor , about 10 yards of canvas (54" wide) , a gallon of TB 2, and assorted bits of wood scraps for door window, and vent framing ... Maybe about 250-300 USD ...including the paint ... add a couple windows and a vent and Bob's your Uncle ... Even with a New HF trailer , you're still way under $1K Thrifty ... !!! The more you can find, scrounge , scavenge, salvage, re-cycle ... the less it costs ...
Been reading that the foam producers have a deal with Habitat for Humanity , so maybe some good foam deals ,plus other stuff, could be had at a Habitat Store ... I do have to go over there and check it out ... might find everything I need ... 8)

would a teardrop built like this be considered a hard sided or soft sided camper? just curious about those parks that require hard sides to stay in their campgrounds. (bear issues)

The trailer would appear hard sided, but not bear proof. Most of our teardrops would not be considered bear proof either. It would take a studious ranger to see this type as soft sided.

I think the biggest thing is, it would not allow sights and smells to escape everywhere, just smells at the doors and windows. This would reduced the chance of a bear taking a random swipe at something moving that it could see through the fabric. If the cooking is restricted to outside, there would be nothing to attract a bear.

Odd , if you did the same exact thing and fiberglassed it , it would be considered hard sided , but difficult to tell the difference upon inspection ... once painted ...
After seeing a bear easily walk /claw right through my FIL s shed wall , I don't think much of anything we build is Bear -Proof ...

Covered with a heavier grade of canvas and properly painted , this makes a pretty TOUGH surface ...the old timers knew !!!

Not bear proof, just slow bear down a couple of seconds. Maybe enough time to get out the other door ( If i had another door ). Or dig the pistol out and shoot said bear. If I had a pistol big enough to do more than piss said bear off even more.

Just thinking I'd rather NOT camp where there is a lot of Bear activity... :o Perhaps a trip to the beach where all you have to worry about is sand in your carpet and a little Seagull poop on the roof ...

Bears are SCARY , especially the really BIG ones ...

When it comes to Grizzlies about the only thing that would be "Proof" would be an iron doored cement bomb shelter, Something like Cheyenne Mountain. Black and brown bears are not as crazy nuts fur covered bulldozers. A fiber glassed RV would probably keep them out for some time. Unless they pop a door open. That would be the weak link. A metal sided RV would slow them down some but I can't see them stopping a determined bear. I would think a wood sided tear would be better than a metal sided RV, Though the doors would probably fail real fast. These bears about know doors ( I think they have classes ) and have been known to pop doors and windows with great speed. But when it comes to tear drops I would think that most bear attacks against them would be directed toward the galley area, most, not all.

The price we pay for visiting their homes.
