DJT wrote:WW, I looked at a couple of options for suspensions, including Caravan rear axles, VW torsion bars, and even a Civic double wishbone with struts. All have some advantages (not least of which is price!), but the absolute simplicity and trail repairability of leafs and a solid axle won out. I have built a couple of trailers with re-purposed axles, and they worked well, but I often had to fab parts to get them to work, and if they break on a trip... Struts are also bulky and hard to build into the trailer body.

I picked up the foam, I was out for a charity trail run, and it was just a little out of the way!

When I asked about a pallet of foam I was told that the 2x8x2" came in 6/pk bundles, 8/pk to a pallet. At $25-$27/sheet...

that is expensive. around here a sheet of 4x8x2" is 30ish. so 27 for 1/2 of that is outragious.

May the foam be with you.

Got the call back from the Loew's manager... Basically he told me that no matter how many sheets I ordered, it still would be 30USD a sheet ... :o That's not including the shipping costs and 9% local sales tax ...

I will be shopping for foam Elsewhere... The guy was a Jerk , "take or leave it" kind of guy ... Maybe I wont be shopping for Anything at Loew's anymore...

I would watch the local CL and the like. Lots of people buy this for building/renos. I know the local HD won't take returns if it is "damaged" which in this case counted the blue plastic wrap...

Post a "wanted" add in craigslist. You just might run into someone that needs to get rid of some. When our Scout troop wanted some old skis for sled runners, one of the leaders posted an add. A gut called him the next day saying he had a bunch of retired rental skis and we could have all we want for free.

It's not much in the grand scheme of things, but if you have (or know someone who has) any form of military ID (Retiree, Dependent, National Guard, Reserve, Active Duty, other) both Lowe's and HD will give you a 10% military discount on your purchase - but you have to ask for it.

Back to the Scavenger hunt ... Guys , Thanks for the "hunt" ideas ....!!!!! :D

Check the local Insulation suppliers ... I'm sure they are much cheaper than the EVIL Loew's ... They may be only Wholesale , but again ,with a good BS story , they'll sell to you ... :D Bring pictures of your intended project ... These guys are always amazed at the other uses we've found for their products ... not just for insulation any more ...

The box stores have a Lot of overhead to pay for , so must charge a premium , whilst appearing to be Thrifty ...

Some small Mom and Pop Lumber yards handle the foam too ...

I still haven't found any 2" locally; but I did come across a roofing supply house near the airport that carries the 1 1/2" almost identical to the Big Orange place. Almost half the price and the guy I talked to (BS'ed) really was interested in seeing the finished product when I get it done. They normally carry the 2"; but have been out for a while. He said if I'm not in a hurry, he would let me know when they get some in.

Often commercial insulation supply houses will sell to the public. Their prices are often much better than the big box stores.

So swung out to the metal supply on Friday and bought another 250lbs of steel! 8-o

Enough to build the floor framing as well as the Diamond Plate "skirt" around the bottom 16" of the trailer. They didn't have the thickness I wanted, but they gave me 1/8 for the same price. This thing is going to be sturdy!

Got all the pieces cut yesterday and the floor frame tacked up (upside down in this pic):

Also got some free windows from a truck cap at the dump!

Now just need to weld in the risers for the floor, weld up the spring mounts, and cut some axle plates and she'll be rollin'

Strong: yes! Light: not so much...

If I did it again, I would use the 1x1 for the whole frame, but the orange was free...
