GPW, the thing about foam construction and why I'm looking to do it is, an electric trolling motor will work. Much cheaper.

A question I have for CC ia how you determine the width and length of the keel piece. I know pirogue don't usually have one, but I've read about several people who have added one to help with tracking. I might as well plan for it.

I'm thinking a 12 foot boat to accommodate my wish to take the dog or grand kid(s) along.

I am leaning toward having cedar wood ribs and bulkheads. The rub rail and the inner rail will be wood too.

I keep reminding myself I need to get BUB done first. :)
Remember, the turtle won. :)

Much cheaper ... that sums it up for me  ... I’m unwilling to spend $10K just to go fishing :o ... Plus gas, food, bait , tackle. etc. etc. etc ...

Just a strip of wood down the bottom would work ... Not really necessary .. They track as good as you can paddle/pole it ... ;) Cedar does sound good , and waterproofed with the mix , even better ...

You gotta’ get the Bub finished !!! ... We’re all anxious to see how it comes out ... :D

Here’s an idea we were thinking about ... Not a Yak .. But may be practical ... Four blocks of foam ...

I would go a lot deeper on the pockets, and bigger so you can get the weight down low inside. Wouldn't want it to be tippy with buoyancy. :frightened:

KC, that’s true huh !!! :o ... maybe half way down ? ~ 10”... ? The wooden keel should add enough strength for cutting deeper pockets ( I think  ) ... would be more comfortable too .. Easy to FAB too , with the four blocks ... more hot wiring ... THANKS !!! :D

I would go as thin as you can on the bottom. The further below the buoyancy point the CG is, the more stable the platform. A very buoyant boat will not displace much water, so is harder to get the CG down, at least by my way of thinking... I am not an expert on boats. :R

Another thing to consider is, with such a simple shape when you cut away the front curve of the bow you are taking buoyancy away. Leaving the stern full depth might result in an imbalance causing the bow to nosedive. Perhaps a scale model with scale ballast?

How much you think we could get away with ??? .... it’s just for Calm waters ... little stress, save supporting my great Bulk, and all the other c**p too.. :o Maybe make the pockets deeper , but narrower... more “meat” (foam ) on the sides ? All that foam should sit pretty high in the water ? What, roughly 30+ cu.ft. of foam ? ...

... a scale foam model .... Yes !!! ... another test ...

This any better ?

We had a 40” wide Coleman Scanoe' for years and fished a lot in it (Wizard 5Hp on the back ... remember those ) ... Very stable and we could easily stand up and fish ... Thinking 48” wide floating block is going to be extremely stable ... And I ALWAYS wear a life jacket ... ;)

Maybe make it flat bottomed like a scow .. even easier , more foam/buoyancy, even More stable ... Might as well call it a light Barge ...

Not really worried about nosediving with an electric trolling motor on calm waters ... Not going that fast ... strictly displacement hull at these speeds .. Draggy, slow,inefficient... But, I’m Fishing, and that’s all that counts eh !!! 8) :D ... Figuring less than $500 all up (or close) ... I can do that ... ;)

Ps. already have a DD battery for the trolling motor . That’s a start...

Out of curiosity I did some web searches.

This thread seems to be a good place to start: boatdesign.net

Oh Gosh !!! The Math !!! :o :frightened: :NC Run away ! Run away !!! :? Apologies... being in and making boats for many years now , much prefer the TLAR method ... This being a “very simple craft” and all ...

KC, if I didn’t mind getting the “wet nananne“ we could just stick a couple pool floats together and fish ... It’s all about how much one wants to endure to catch fish ...

Speaking of math , I screwed up the previous cubic foot figure , and it looks like now , it’s almost Twice as much ... ~50 cu.ft. :duh:

Everyone,

I have another boat that is 4' wide X 8' long and is extremely stable. Can haul three plus fishing gear. It is a Puddle Duck Racer. http://www.pdracer.com.

One builder on the west coast of Florida built his out of foam and fiberglass/epoxy. Very strong and stable.

Boat can be powered by electric motor or rowed or sailed.

I get the idea of simple, but I just can't seem to avoid "project creep". :?

I like this design, for as elegant as it is it is still pretty simple, and tho it was designed for plywood, it would be pretty easy to convert to foam.

KC, by “project creep” are you referring to the ever expanding amount of time it takes to complete new projects ? I suffer from that !!! Likely too much thinking and planning, but we find that part most enjoyable ... and the discussions... We are so blessed to be able to communicate our ideas and opinions so quickly ... 8)

And logically , the more time to think , the simpler the project becomes ... Here’s the latest thoughts ... More “sit on top” than boat ... more Barge than Yak’ ... So Easy , Grandma could make one ...
