Just for a reference , here’s a pic of the trailer as I got it ... all cleaned up now but the geometry is still the same ... those are the 13” tires ... 93912

And here’s what we’ve got right now .... Yet to add the black nasty stuff till the canvas is glued under... You can see how Nasty that tire is ... :frightened: Note the small clearance between tire and floor ... :o

Now the wife’s asking ... “Did you get the door done yet ? “ ... :duh:

Hmmm. Does not look like you will have much clearance there. And the axle is already below the springs. Might have to consider having a spacer welded on to the axle and longer u bolts. Even going down to 12 inch tires will not give much more room. And really I would stay away from "pop Up " trailer wheel/tire set up. Just something about those tiny wheels is just wrong to me.

Randy , you see my dilemma !!! :frightened:
Now it might not be that difficult to just bite the bullet and build in some wheel wells and just use the bigger tires ...... A cutout in the floor and side and a box built over that , and some gussets for additional strengthening. Was even thinking about using the fenders off the spare trailer and inset them up into the floor (they’re bolted to the trailer frame ) and then just box over that ... They are very heavy galvanized fenders ...and I have them ... :D

Checking out the dimensions , it may be easier to do this ... and we may not have to break the outer line of the floor /wall ...

Might even be able to get the sheet metal guy I know to bend up some simple wheel wells /fenders to fit ? ...

Heaven knows I'm a true novice on these things but if you could I'd think retrofitting wheel wells would be the better route. You've not canvases yet so you're just hacking through foam & plywood. It's yet another design/construction challenge & not one I would relish. Yet it might also be the thriftier choice, no?

I understand your problem ,, Might I suggest using a part of a plastic drum under the trailer to protect the bottom of the trailer put the bolts upside down so the heads of the bolts are on the underside on the tire side. check around for someone who sells plastic drums mine cost about ten dollars. ( if you lived closer I would give you what I have. :( ) then go for a 12 inch tire. My HF tire to bottom of fender is 2 3/4 inches from the factory. You do not plan to go 4 wheeling, just leave town, staying on paved roads. I think you will be ok. with the 12 inch tire.

just my thoughts.......

I do appreciate your thoughts !!! Yes, right now is the time to do this , before canvassing. Maybe a little more work to go this route , but the advantages seem to outweigh the labor invested ...

So I went inside and marked off the Rough dimensions of how a wheel well would fit .. giving a generous measure to the width (24” , wider than the tire ) and all the way to the trailer frame , and drawing in some suggested bracing for when this is cut away ... Not really that big or intrusive , doesn’t interfere with the Mini-Galley .. and we gain another 4.25” + the inch we already have ... That should be plenty huh ?

plastic Barrels/drums huh ??? What a cool idea !!! 8)

making a spacer for that axle would be vary simple, I bet if you talk with a trailer shop they would make some cheap and quick, or make then your self with square tubing, same width as the springs, about 3" long, then change the bolt in the springs and bolt teh spacer to the bottom so the head will still fall in the hole on the axle for alignment and to stop it from slidding. Use 3/16" or 1/4 wall square tube. If you ask your welder friend I bet it woudl take all of 15 minutes to make, compared to how log for your other options...

If you really want, I could probably make a set and post pics, maybe even mail them to you...

the down side to this is it would raise the roof that much into the air, causing more drag.

SJ, That would be easier huh ... I was thinking as a last resort a few of something like this stacked together to give a bit of extra height ... and longer bolts of course ... http://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Suspens ... 75173.html Another inch up top and using the smaller tires would give me 3” .. That may be enough room as Mary said , I won’t be off-roading , except in front of my house and down the street (dirt road) ...

Just put a wood frame Bryan the trailer and floor and raise it that way would by far be the easiest.

The camper is already higher than you would like it to be; cut the wheel wells, avoid the dreaded blow over. She will tow nicer if you keep the weight lower.

If it were me I would make the fender wells from 1/2 ply (max) and line the under side with thin alum flashing, then seal with your choice, black goop.

I suppose you could build them up out of foam, but then they would need some protection from foot traffic.

The barrel sections sound like a good idea at first because they are rugged and one piece molded, but then you have to deal with attaching the irregular shape and if you want the inside to be flat you'd have to box them in anyway. $0.02

Are you done yet? ;)

Knowing the size difference in a full size 13" vs 4.80 x 12" you'd gain more than 1". Remember the tires are flat and would really gain an inch of height inflated possibly 2". I'd the 12"are the larger size drop to the 4.8 and you'll have plenty clearance.
