paint and cloth?

Postby 48Rob » Thu Jul 12, 2012 10:27 am

Can I use oil based paint with bed sheets or must it be glue, latex, etc?
Can I rough up oil based paint surface and apply "patches" of paint and coth over existing surface?
Anyone try elastomeric roof coating (snow roof?).

Rob, the traditional way of covering boat cabin roofs was oil-based paint over heavy canvas. And I think the initial coats of paint were a mix of whatever was lying around in the bottom of unfinished tins under the workshop bench (none of that flammable stores stuff back then....).

That should work huh ??? The recommended procedure around here is to try it on a piece of scrap first ...

Hi Rob,

Here are some links I've run across on this topic.

An Aussie Restoration using paint and 'calico':
"Fisher's Resto":

Here's a link to fellow forum member rowerwet's post in "TD Construction
Tips & Techniques". It's an account of his experience using paint & canvas
as an exterior finish for his TD.

http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=45468

Desertmoose's 'HornyToad' build also has it:

And rayvillian used paint and bedsheets on his latest Winter Warrior.
Just look him up under the "Members" feature and I'm sure you can find
his info on that.

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo
