Canvas and paint thickness galley gap

If you all don't mind. I would like a little feedback. How thick is the basic canvas paint layer? I need to allow for that I believe as I set up my galley. Right? Also if you have a look at the pic I'm wondering how much of a gap to allow for on the wall to boot lid. Does this make any sense?

it will really depend on the canvas you use, your best bet would be to make up a sample with the paint and canvas you plan to use on a piece of foam, then after it dries cut it in half. you will be able to get the best idea that way.

Ditto that. The gap you need will depend on the weight of the canvas and how thickly you apply the paint. Wish there were a simpler answer than running a trial.

How about this...
How much gap do I want when it's finished? For gasket? Ballpark, cause I know you are going to say... "It depends on the gasket you plan to use..."

Sorry I can't be of more help, but I have flat "cargo" style doors in the back so I never came up with that problem. I think Grant at Lil Bear sells the Hurricane Hinge and he should be able to tell you how much gap to leave. The Hurricane Hinge seems to be widely accepted as the best hinge for the hatch.

Rog, I think I’d make the gap just maybe a eighth of an inch smaller than the gasket thickness...again , depending on the gasket material ...

my galley hinge is also live plastic, I don't have any gasket underneath it, the hinge is waterproof if installed correctly. (just don't goof like I did and cut the hinge shorter, leave it full length, if it sticks off the sides of the tear trim it flush to them but that is it, the hinge is a great gutter when the galley is open)
I made my hatch top flush with the galley wall/roof end then stuck the hinge on over it.

My lid practicly touches the side and as foam compresses I figure very little space is really needed under the lip
Not to hyjack this thread but where did you get you plastic hinge I thought I got mine years ago from McMaster car but when I looked I don't remember it being that expensive and I might use that on my present build?

No worries, I saw mcmasters prices and kept looking. Plus they sell 4 or 8 ft.. A foot to short or three to long.

Found this one 6' for 8.82 only 1 1/2" wide but might work for me my galley is 6'3" wide but I've inly got 3 small hinges on it now
