Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

Are there any advantages to using 2" foam over 1-1/2"? I know when building a teardrop, every inch counts. I'm thinking I can gain an extra inch in the inside width of my teardrop by using 1-1/2" foam instead of 2". I do not plan on using plywood as a support. Since I am in the planning stages at this point I thought I would ask the question to the more experienced foam builders.

Dave , nothing unusual ... Thicker is stronger , better insulation too , but I doubt you’ll notice the difference of 1/2” ...

The 1-1/2 thk stuff I've been using is fairly stiff by itself so I don't see why it wouldn't work. Didn't Louella use 1-1/2 on the Mickey trailer?

I guess overall width might be a factor if you were doing a really wide build. On a guess I would say that if you are going over 5 wide with a flat or gently arched roof you might want the extra depth, but for the walls I expect 1-1/2 would be sufficient for typical 4 to 5, maybe even 6 ft high walls.

The Big Pink and New Build: A Canned Ham in Foam would be good builds to look at for people with experience going larger, but for a regular TD I think 1-1/2 is fine.

I have looked at the Big Pink in person at two gatherings. It is only about 5-1/2 ft wide (outside dimensions). I would like more room inside. I want to do a Scotty/Foamie Hybrid and have a gaucho type couch/bed. I am six feet tall so I want to be able to lay width wise in the trailer. So I would need about 6'2" on the inside to be comfortable. I was measuring a Scotty Sportsman a few weeks ago and It was 6'4" in width (outside). I will be seeing this trailer again next week at Tuckahoe SP in Maryland (Chesapeake Tearjerkers Chapter) and I am going to get more measurement off of it (inside and outside). I plan on starting my build when I get back from this gathering. I already have the Harbor Freight 4 x 8 registered and ready to go. I just need some more measurements to begin.

I figured I could save an inch in width and go an inch wider than the Scotty that I am using to measure.

Mel (atahoekid) has his Road Foamie up for sell. It is extra wide, but I don't think it is at slouchy height for most people. You still might want to check it out. He used glass and epoxy for his outer skin, but we all still consider it to be a foamie. Lots of features built in.
