Light weight trailer questions

Postby skyl4rk » Sun Apr 10, 2016 7:27 am

I bought a Harbor Freight boat trailer off of craigslist and got a good deal on it. It is this one, rated for 600 pounds: http://www.harborfreight.com/600-lb-cap ... -5002.html

Ideally, I would like to build a 6x10, 6.5' standing foamie, probably a simple box shape. I had a 4x8 that was 5 foot tall and it was a little too small. My design goal is a simple design that can be built quickly. I would like to haul it with my 4 cylinder car with max trailer capacity of 1,000 lbs, 100lbs tongue weight. I don't necessarily need to use this trailer but if it could be done with this trailer it would save a lot of cash.

Do you think a foamie of this size will come in under 600lbs? Or better said, under 450lbs, leaving me some room for gear weight?

The width of the trailer is 52", from outside of tire to outside of tire. How wide do you think one could build a foamie with this width?

What size foamie do you think would fit on this narrow trailer with limited load capacity?

Anything is possible , but it would have to be carefully built . Think Aircraft style construction ... where every piece is maximized for strength...

On the other hand the boat trailer is rather small and might be best used for hauling a nice light Foamie’ Boat ... Those are done here too ... ;) For the size cabin you want , maybe you’d want something with a little higher rating ... ? And you might have seen the FoamStream, 6' X 13.5' ... 6’4” tall inside ... ~850lbs (mostly trailer weight, but I got it for Free :D ) So it is possible to keep it under 1,000lb. ... JMHO

Here’s an idea , Make a nice Foamie boat , sell it and the boat trailer as one for a nice profit and use that to pay for the whole trailer build !!!

I made a sketch including the axle width and it looks like it would get blown over by side winds too easily.

I would want an axle width at least 72" outside tire to outside tire.
