popup camper box as foamie base ?

Postby rustytoolss » Sat May 14, 2016 1:02 pm

For those of you that have built a Foamie. I've been looking at popup campers on craigslist. I've been wondering if you could use the base box/shell/body from a popup. And attach the foam onto the upper ledge of the box ? Not planning to use the popup top/roof, just the box and frame. Hey it's just a question. Im sure that scrapping the box would make a better starting point. But if possible, it could create a good plan/ maybe not! I've ideas that were worse than this that have worked  . But doing this may be more trouble that what it worth. Let me know what you think. I can take it!      :NC

This is just a general question. I don't have a popup that I've planned to buy. It's just that I've found several popup on CL, with bad canvas. But the box is still usable. I'm not sure that you could attach the foam to the upper ledge of the popup box. That would be the gamble. Even if it would not attach properly , just remove the box. And build a standard Foamie.

Start with the chassis... dump the box! Do it your way!

I have an old pop-up with bad canvas but otherwise sound. I've thought of making wall panels of canvas covered foam. I thought I would seal the corners with strips of canvas with Velcro.

I know this was discussed long ago , but I’s still think a Pop Up conversion ( seems they all have bad canvas eh ? ) something like an A-Liner ( Maybe not exact, similar , along those lines ) would be pretty easy in Foam ... seems a natural for a that kind of trailer . Crumbs for thought ...

There is one converted pop up on the board. He kept the box and lift intact and built a foamie "hi-lo" of sorts.

Pop up frames are heavy to start with. I built a camper out of PVC, foam and duct tape on a pop up frame and it still came in over 1600 lbs with all my cabinets and galley
