Building the bed...

So....

I am considering how to build the bed... And I am beyond lousy at sewing.

I am thinking about taking an affordable 8" Memory Foam king size gel foam mattress...

The idea here is as I have repeatedly mentioned. transverse accross the bed of the truck.

If I go with a folding couch on both sides design, I am going to be cutting the 80" long mattress into 4 20" long segments I believe it is 78" wide(?). That's fine, set them up make effectively fold up to a troop carrier configuration on each side...

But that leaves me with unprotected foam blocks. I need to sew up some sort of covers for them...

I might have mentioned I am abysmal at sewing, but I am more than willing to learn....

So what I am asking for is how can I learn to sew things like upholstery / cushion covers, curtains, and other misc soft goods for the camper?

You don't have to cover Memory Foam. It does okay without it. However, a couple non-sew things that you can do are:

1. Use two fitted sheets, putting one around the underside and the other on the upper side. This will give you double coverings on the sides, which is okay. Also, this allows you to wash your coverings whenever you need to.

2. Cut material to size and glue it to the foam. There is a glue called E6000 that I have used to glue various foams together. I have found it at Joann Fabrics, ACE Hardware, and Amazon plus it is probably found other places. There are probably other glues that would work, too.

Joined a sewing forum back when and learned from them.. Google the forums and look for one that has current activity. Much like here, folks that 'can' are typically happy to assist.

For our mattress's, we folded a flat sheet and stitched the short ends, making a pocket. This way we can remove the cover and wash them. Heck of a lot easier than sewing in a zipper! ;)

I used this company for beds in both of my campers. You can order to size needed.
