Hi folks,
Just FYI, I finally found some 3” DuPont Styrofoam 4x8 xps, for what seems a great price, $40 per sheet. It’s very difficult to find. Maybe it’s overkill, but I’m planning a 6x10 vardo style I can stand up in, based on the image below, so I feel more comfortable with 3” xps construction without reinforcing arches. If I was limited to 2” I was going to add one or two reinforcing arches under the roof.

I’m picking up a dozen sheets on Tuesday south of Washington DC, but he still has about 50 left if anyone is interested. Currently 2” xps 4x8 sheets are going for $39 at the big box stores here in northwest Virginia so this seems a very good price.

3"... That seems like a good price ... 8) If you want a rounded top like that , the picture shows 3 sheets of 1" thick laminated together...

I talked to the guy who made that one. Though the photo above may look like they laminated 1” sheets, it’s actually one 2” sheet. He used two inch xps with kerfs cut by saber saw every four inches, glue placed in the kerfs, then the panel laid into the curve cut out to create the end walls. He held them in place with ratchet straps and boards while he applied pmf.

I don’t know yet whether I can do the same with 3” sheets.

Considering the current market, $40 is a fantastic price.

It turned out to be Foamular 250, not Dow Styrofoam, but it’s definitely 3” xps and at $40 per sheet, I think it was a bargain. My 6x10 design only called for nine sheets, but I picked up several extra. I’m going to build it, then since it’s not a traditional teardrop design, try to add a more aerodynamic nose cone to it, to see if it helps with fuel efficiency.
