Some new adhesive options for xps and pmf?

Postby BrianInVA » Mon Feb 28, 2022 6:28 pm

I recently came across a product called “Foam Fusion,” sold by https://hotwirefoamfactory.com in California. I was curious after watching this video:

https://youtu.be/0Uz9YeehLU4

I contacted them today to ask whether their adhesive may be appropriate for a Foamie camper build, and described the building methods and demands for an xps and pmf adhesive. This was their response:

The problem with Foam Fusion is that it takes a long time to dry when used with XPS foam, but after it dries the foam will tear before the glue gives. You should not glue directly onto the factory surface, it needs to be lightly sanded. Foam Fusion should work very well with your pmf system, as it penetrates most fabrics.

We have a new glue, FoamFast that worked super well with XPS, but does not work well with EPS, so we are blowing it out:
https://hotwirefoamfactory.com/foamfast-adhesive.html
I have test pieces of DOW XPS Blueboard foam that I glued 3-4 months ago and when you try to pull the pieces apart the foam tears, with much force, but the glue holds fast. This is probably too pasty to work with your pmf unless you coat the foam, then squeegee the fabric in place.

StyroGoo bonds super well with XPS, so would be great for joints, but it's too pasty for your pmf.

Love what you are all doing with foam. Let me know if we can be of any further help.

Has anyone tried their adhesives yet?

Foam Fusion:

FoamFast:

I just discovered these. I have no interest or relationship with them whatsoever.

$70 per gallon + shipping vs TBII at ~$19 per gallon at your hometown lumber yard. Not sure the advantages are worth it. And note that TBII is often thinned for pmf use by up to 50%. No mention of thinning Foam Fusion in their description.

Is there an advantage I'm not seeing?

The 10oz tubes of FoamFast, which looks very promising for bonding xps foam, is $2.95 a tube.

That’s cheaper than most tubes of construction adhesive, I would think.

But you’re all correct, I didn’t look at the price of a gallon of their Foam Fusion and compare it to Titebond II prior to posting this thread. I hadn’t realized it was that expensive.

The whole idea for a Foamie trailer was expressed in the first thread ( Thrifty alternatives ) Building a Light , Simple, efficient trailer that wouldn’t Rot , and we wouldn’t have to mortgage the farm to get . :D

The company, https://hotwirefoamfactory.com is near Los Angeles. A lot of nearby Hollywood’s props for TV and movies are made out of xps foam so I think they cater to that crowd as their prices are a bit … out of reach for typical thrifty Foamie camper builders.

One thing they DO offer is a great set of tutorials for working with foam:

I found these ones particularly helpful:

Since I need to make a large semicircle for the top front of my Foamie:

In the original post, the link for the lady testing Foam Fusion, if you follow her channel and watch her do a PMF covering on her camper, (which is a really nice small foamie) she uses TBII for her PMF. The Foam Fusion is only used for gluing two pieces of foam together.
Never argue with an idiot. They will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I think she built that Foamie a month or two before she did this test.

I wonder if the Foam Fusion would be good for adhering fiber glass panels, frp, filon, etc. to foam.
