Searching for an image of wall to floor attachment

Postby BrianInVA » Tue Apr 05, 2022 2:59 pm

I need help locating a schematic image of how a foamie camper wall with pmf attaches to the floor. I know I’ve seen it I but can’t find i now.

The computer type drawing showed how the canvas on the outside wrapped around and under the wood floor and frame. And it showed how the inner wall pmf canvas was secured to the inside floor.

Any assistance? A friend is going to attempt to build one too and I need that image to help explain to him how the walls attach securely to the floor and frame. My attempt to explain it in words wasn’t clear to him.

Thanks!

You know those attachment drawings were from 2010 , and while that works , since then we've learned a lot , but now we're recommending the sides end with a drip edge instead of the canvas wrapping around under the floor . In my circumstance , the constant morning dew kept the under the floor canvas damp all the time and despite much waterproofing , the canvas eventually rotted taking the old floor edges with it ...
Now we recommend a "drip edge" on all foamies , which let the dew / water go straight down past the floor level and direct to the ground. It was George that came up with a workable drip edge using commonly available ( and thrifty) sheetrock corner edging ... It was what I used after replacing my floor with a new "board floor:" , and that has been absolutely no problem since ..

IMHO , something like this works better ... 156655

I understand what you’re saying about a drip edge.

However, in the colored portion of this drawing, I don’t understand how the wall is supported, if it doesn’t rest directly on the floor, as in the un colored line drawing in the same image.

What suspends your wall in the colored part? My floor is even with my wood frame so I’m not sure how I would do this.

Here is how I did it.

It was partly inspired by Ghcoe's #1 https://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=54099&start=60

  1. Panel A: I glued the canvas to my foam walls before assembling them onto the trailer. I could do it on a flat surface. I recommend this where ever possible. On my trailer there were some bits on the inside that needed to be done after assemby that were very painful.
  2. Panel B. I glued a 8" wide strip of canvas to the edge of the floor. This will be wrapped over the wall when it gets attached. I screwed and glued a 2" x 1/4" strip of plywood along the side of the floor where I intended to attach the wall. I used a hot knife to cut out some foam (panel A) where the two pieces would meet.
  3. Panel C. I glued the bottom of the foam wall to the floor with some latex caulk and glued the free end of the inside wall canvas over the plywood strip. I then glued the other end of the 8" canvas strip over the bottom portion of the outside wall.
  4. Panel D. I glued the loose canvas at the bottom of the outside wall over the wrapped 8" strip. When the glue set, this provided a continuous flow of fabric attaching the outside wall to the bottom of the floor. Finally I glued a hemmed edge to form a neat appearing drip edge from the remaining canvas.

I don't show it in the diagram but I also put 1/4"" wood washers between the floor and the trailer chassis to minimize the chassis rubbing on the wrapped canvas. This will hopefully prevent damage to the canvas.

These walls are quite sturdy. I got up 70 MPH on the freeway towing this trailer. No problems!

I epoxied a strip of canvas to the Zipwall. Then glued the side wall to the floor foam on top of the zipwall. The canvas wrapped onto the bottom 5inches of the wall.

Because my floor and wooden frame extends beyond the metal frame on the front, back and sides of my utility trailer, I was planning on just wrapping the canvas from the pmf on the exterior of the wall down and under the wooden frame, gluing it then securing it with pvc quarter round trim, which would also serve as a drip edge under the frame.

Think that would suffice?

Now then , I have an inner framework to support the walls , so no problem ...But no matter how you choose to attach your wall, a drip edge is Very important ... JMHO  Water is the enemy of most every trailer . :frightened:
One idea should we choose to wrap the canvas under the trailer , before you paint it , coat it liberally with the Mix , we know that works ...

PVC expands at a different rate than the other materials. You may
see it twisting between fasteners in the long length.

Would oak quarter round trim be better? Metal drip edge?

I lost all my drawings when I had a hard drive fail on me. These are drawings I have drawn up to try to explain the theory recently. I don't have as much time as I did to make them perfect, but it should get the idea across.
