I think brakes are pretty much a preference thing unless you are pulling with a very light vehicle. In which case they are a pretty good idea.
Most trailer brakes are electric drum brakes, there is also a hydraulic actuated coupler for a hydraulic setup, more pricey than electric and not my personal favorite, mostly because you loose a little of the control you have with an electric brake controller. Disc brakes are showing up more on trailers now but they can be pretty expensive, I'd use them but they are a bit out of my price range.
On my TD there won't be any brakes, mostly because I will be sure that whatever I tow with has enough brake to stop me and the trailer.
I'm sure everyone will have some thought on this subject and this is just my .02 worth.

I plan on keeping my trailer weight low (under 900 pounds loaded), so don't think I'll need any brakes. The car has 4 wheel discs, so there shouldn't be any problem stopping.

Breaks or no brakes is really a common sense question. I have a Dodge Dakota 4X4 Quad Cab. This is the only thing I tow my trailer with. The brakes on this vehicle are more than adequate to stop a 725lb trailer. But...if you drive a Mazda Miata and try to tow....Look into some trailer breaks!

I pulled the Aliner w/o brakes a few times. Ended up putting brakes on myself. I feel much safer. The TD - no brakes. Don't feel they're necesary with such a light weight. Never looked into putting brakes on the HF axle. Would have to have different hubs and don't know about the space available for the drums. Nope. No breaks for the TD.
