I think brakes are pretty much a preference thing unless you are pulling with a very light vehicle. In which case they are a pretty good idea.
Most trailer brakes are electric drum brakes, there is also a hydraulic actuated coupler for a hydraulic setup, more pricey than electric and not my personal favorite, mostly because you loose a little of the control you have with an electric brake controller. Disc brakes are showing up more on trailers now but they can be pretty expensive, I'd use them but they are a bit out of my price range.
On my TD there won't be any brakes, mostly because I will be sure that whatever I tow with has enough brake to stop me and the trailer.
I'm sure everyone will have some thought on this subject and this is just my .02 worth.
