Being from the real Northern California I don't think I have a recognizable accent. In Scotland last fall my wife and I were frequently asked if we were from Canada since we didn't have an easily identified American accent.

I've also been accused of saying "ax" (ask) and "bald" (boiled). AND, when I get frustrated (angry), people will ask me what language I am speaking. Thank the stars they aren't mind readers! :lol:

Accent! What Accent? Everybody else talks funny! Mine is a soft East Tennessee Southern drawl - seems to charm these Utah ladies.

Probably closest to TV standard English (western/midwest/northern). I well remember an anthropology/linguistics class in dialects. This can be essential in doing an ethnography. As an example what to you call it, a bucket a pail, hogie Dagwood, sub. These tell you where they come from and give clues where they came from.

Was raised in the Missouri ozarks & live in the Kansas flatlands. Moved to Utah for a couple of years, Those people thought I talked real funny. They had no idea what oleo was & had never heard of a divan. I told them they were the ones that talked funny. Where I came from everybody talked like me.

no vote spot for northwest minnesota scandanavian...
you can occasionally find a church that is having a norwegian service, finn also..At my grandparents house when I was a kid/teen you could hear english and norwegian mixed from the older generation, norwegian if they were arguing and didnt want me to know what it was about. :lol:

Me too. I was born near Philly, lived in Pittsburgh and Cincinnati, and then in Texas. My accent changes depending on where I am and who I'm talking to.

Well since my daddy was a pure Yankee from Michigan and Momma is a pure Southern girl from the hills of VA. I guess I am a mut. I speak normal until I go South where I was raised and then I don't have an accent......

Now mom leaves off "a's" and subs. "er" at the end of words. An English thang I think. I worked hard to not do that. My dad didn't have a bad accent cause he lived in the South so long......

I spent 22 years moving saround the workl and working with folks from all corners of the States and other place while serving in the USAF. I think that most people would say that I really don't have a recognizable accent, although I did grow up in Northern NY state.

Look you.

I believe us from north coast of Wales speak what they now call Estuary Welsh. North Walian with a pinch of scouse.

Can't think of any examples that our American cousins might know from here though :oops:
