Garage-able Standy

Postby StandUpGuy » Tue Dec 28, 2021 9:08 pm

HOA restrictions require a trailer to be kept in the garage. When I built a standy many years ago, I made it garage-able by means of a pop top. I am starting the planning of my next standy build to be able to store in the garage but with no pop top. My plan is to have a removeable pod that slides off a utility trailer. The pod will have small wheels in the back so that when it is off the trailer it can be wheeled into the garage.

In this first offered profile, I have built into the the back end of the trailer some handrails. They are there to be able to move the pod from the utility trailer bed. In addition, this profile is actually 9 feet long. Wanting to keep the trailer light without a lot of windage as well as make it using 8 foot material. Obviously this needs to be light enough for a single person to move it from the trailer. To that end I have reduced the profile to 8 foot.

FWIW, my plan for a removable cabin is 4 casters more central and a means to lift the cabin and pull the trailer out from under.

just a ponderment ...

¿ why not use axle-less spindles/suspension and build a well in the floor ?

ave garage doors are 7' high when fully open which could be raised 6"-1' by an innovative carpenter

unless you are over 6' tall your resulting box would not have to be downloaded and you could still stand up fully inside it

Are you opposed to any type of lift roof? I have always liked the Alto Safari roof lift https://safaricondo.com/en/caravanes-alto/! Just don't like their build quality.. Others here have done similar to it.

The wheels on the rear are a cool idea. I see jacking the tongue and sliding it off like a dump bed. Furniture dolly's as the front comes off.

You going foamie to make it lightweight?

I'm using a trailer I already own. From ground to trailer bed is 19". My garage clearance is 6'-8".

A good plan. Especially if the pod is big and heavy.

I built a pop top many years ago. This time I will keep it simple.

I am starting to develop a floor plan. I should state my objectives. 1) I want a couch and table to convert to bed. 2) I want to use a, somewhat remote, window AC unit in the front storage to eliminate as much noise in the trailer as possible. 3) I want to be able to use the trailer as a transport for a large scooter I have. So anything in the way of the scooter needs to be easily removed. 4) keep it simple and light so I can slide it off the utility trailer.

First I am mostly thinking about how to handle the AC unit. Maybe mounted with big rubber dampening mounts of some sort. perhaps flexible ducting into the trailer. Or maybe something less restrictive. Maybe fabricate some large rubber rectangular duct.

I like the 9' design.
You could graft on the extra bit of ply with a 6" 1/2 lap

Your old pop up is similar to what I'm planning, but no pop up.
I'll be done when I'm finished, if that's not fast enough, take a number.

What if you make a sliding garage door? I don't quite understand the meaning of such a door as you described, since it will greatly reduce the space in your garage at the entrance. I think an ordinary roller shutter door would be right here since its doors go up when opened and save garage space. I installed such doors since I originally bought a house with a small garage, where there is little space. My construction friends helped me with this, and garage door costs pleasantly surprised me. I thought such services cost 3 times more than it actually turned out. So it is not only convenient but also very profitable.
