Has anyone tried using cedar fence pickets for exterior skinning. Maybe t/g the wood or 1/4 notch with the boards glued and finish nailed to the studs? Sure would like a little help. thinking of trying this I think it would look great.

I think it will look great and smell good. You will probably have lots of trimming to make them uniform. The ones I have used for fencing have been less than perfect when trying to but them up 1/8" here 1/4" there. Nothing that you notice on hundreds of feet of fence but will need addressed if you plan to router your own tounge and groove or other fitting method. It will sure look nice. Perhaps consider vertical board and batten. Image

I bought some cedar a couple days ago got them set out so they can dry out first before I start milling them. Seems like all the big box stores have is wet cedar in stock.

Let me know how it works out Tom. What size and how you fasten them, are you going to fasten straight to the studs?

I posted about using old fence pickets for a "rustic" build some time ago. In my imaginary build I used old time Jen Lind construction where the cedar is strong enough for both the siding and the studs. I would use tar paper stapled to the inside and thin ply over the paper for interior wall finish. The sandwiched tar paper would take care of any gaps between the old boards. The roof would be corrugated steel roofing, used if possible.

Will do. I am planning on tacking them directly to the 3/4 plywood skeleton with glue and nails around the edges. I also cutting them into 3 wide strips and routing overlay joints to eliminate any voids between the boards. Hopefully anyways. lol

What kind of routing, is it just 1/4 inch square with glue to lock out water? Are you going to use finish nails of a certain kind so they don't rust or does it matter? Whats your thoughts on screws instead of nails? sorry if I am bothering you to much. Just trying to do this right the first time.

Quarter inch overlap has been my plan and the nails will be mainly used to hold the wood in place till the glue dries. Hopefully the nails will never see water as I plan on them being covered up by trim boards and in the groove of the overlap. I mainly plan on using them to hold the cedar in place till the glue sets. That's my thoughts on it so far. When I start putting them on I might change my mind and do it differently if I don't like how its going.

Oh, now I see, the nails will not show. I was thinking they would be in the facing for strength. What brand of giue are you going to use, maybe titebond lll? Let me know how it works.

I haven't quiet decided on glue yet. At the very least tight bond III.

Google "tear drop barn board" and you'll see some examples.
