From North Alabama

Thrilled to hear of plans for a gathering here, BUT you should know that Guntersville is PACKED on holidays, so make reservations in advance. We camp there often since we live only an hour away. It is a great campground with about 350 sites, sand beach with swimming area, lighted tennis courts for those who are interested, but also a beautiful primitive area for those who don't need ele/water.
We took our TTT there last weekend, and had several people stop by to ask for a tour-I love it!

about Buck's Pocket and Joe Wheeler

Postby stbuch » Sat Jul 15, 2006 7:46 am

Buck's Pocket SP- Beautiful, secluded, hiker's dream, relatively small campground, not as much to do as Guntersville

Joe Wheeler SP- good lake access, wooded, rv sites close together, primitive section is where we stay and it has boat launch.

stbuch-don't they have a bug museum close to Joe Wheeler?

I think watching dung beetles is where the very idea of the TD was first concieved

Is the occupancy at J.W. on a non holiday weekend manageable?

Not sure yet which weekend we will go (depends on a workshop that my husband wants to attend), but Guntersville looks really good, and the selling point for my husband might be the golf course. Do any of the folks here possibly want to golf as well? Or anyone know about the course there?

About that date---

Ouch, that is BIG SPRING JAM weekend! Even though it is a little ways from Huntsville, the park might be booked.

For you out-of-towners, BIG Spring Jam is a HUGE music festival and tourist draw.

Make your reservations now!

I just called Guntersville, they assured me that the only weekend I would need a reservation would be Labor Day. I specifically asked if the Spring Jam would cause a shortage-she said it didn't.

I may call back and make one anyway just to be on the safe side.
