I stand corrected. I have driven through that area many times, and didn't remember it being that cool in August. But, then, I camped in a small campground in North Georgia where the temperature was 10-15 degrees cooler than than it was in Helen, GA, just 8 miles to the south of it.

Sometimes I pretend to be normal. But, that gets boring...so I go back to being me.

The temperatures can change at the blink of an eye. This past summer, it was unseasonable hotter than normal, which is why we picked a place that had a swimmin' hole. Like we always say up here in the NC mountains, If ya don't like the waether we are havin', wait 5 minutes :?
The weather should be good, warm days and not so warm nights

This gathering should will be a lot of fun. Carla and I have had the pleasure of camping with the Northern Chapters and they is good people. Even converted a few towards PJ&C. I think Chip has renamed it to the Classic Vlasic :QM :tipsy: :awesome:

New River

Postby Mark & Andrea Jones » Tue Jan 03, 2006 1:41 pm

The New River is fairly large and open - and not very deep either, except in isolated spots. I think width is about 200 yds or so. Not much manuevering. There are some small ledges / gravel bars too - class I/II maybe. With more water, it generally washes most of the ledges out. Generally speaking, there are multiple access points for trips of almost any length.

There is also a section of the New called Fosters Falls (downstream of the I-77 bridge) which is not a trip that I would recommend for a novice paddler. This section gets more difficult with more water. Almost any other section of the New in that area (generally upstream of the I-77 bridge) is a novice level - class I/II.

However, if there is interest, we'd be willing to consider taking a group to the Fosters Falls section - subject to our veto for safety reasons, of course!

Hi all,

Thanks for all the info, folks. We got to get to work on making reservations, and clearing Vacation days at work. Thanks for the river info too. I have composite sea kayaks, that don't take to kindly to rock bashing. They are made for speed and open water. Guess I will pass, and bring bikes instead. See you there.

Seriously considering trying to make it to this one. What's the latest we can register for it? I have to go by our racing schedule (it's subject to change at any time) during the summer months so I really can't plan too far in advance. Sounds like a good time, cept for the 6 hour drive down.

I don't have the anwser to that question, NiteTimes...but I am working on getting you the anwser  . I know that we are having Tee shirts printed up and not sure what the deadline is  . As soon as I get the info, I'll get it posted.

I am going to HiJack this thread for a minute....Are you into dirt track racin'? In the late 70's - early 80's we would head to the tracks after work on Friday. There were two dirt tracks in the Charlotte,NC area. Semi-Modified racin', Fan Participation and the Powder Puff divisions......MAN WAS THAT FUN

Hi Kerry,

That would be 3 now,and after this weekend and last 3 days I can now afford a Harley. Had to work early Sunday morning to today at the home to make sure they had hot water. Worked rotating shifts every 6-8 hours ,and finished about an hour before this post. PS don't call me I will be sleeping for about a day & a half.

Called the camp ground and made reservations, also mailed Len the registration. Planning on arriving Thursday morning and leaving Sunday morning. If there is an interest we would like to be included in a rafting trip down river.

River

Postby Mark & Andrea Jones » Wed Jan 04, 2006 9:30 pm

Please don't get me wrong on the river! It's not the rafting type! If you are expecting a class IV/V raft trip like the New River Gorge or the Gauley River in WV, it ain't gonna happen! This section is much more suitable for an easy river trip in a canoe / kayak with some small / gentle rapids that aren't much more than a wave train in most places. Yes, there are rocks, but it isn't a rock-bashing festival.

I'd be happy to coordinate a trip, but I don't have extra boats. So, if anyone is interested and HAS A CANOE/KAYAK, I'd be more than willing to take a group.

However, if there is enough interest, I can look into some boat rentals, too. Knowing how expensive gas is getting these days, it might be cheaper to rent a canoe than to bring one, if you are coming a long distance.

Since bikes were mentioned earlier . . . . The New River Trail State Park http://www.dcr.state.va.us/parks/newriver.htm runs right along the New River as part of the Rails to Trails system. It is 57 miles long and there are multiple access points. In addition to that, there is the Virginia Creeper Trail http://www.vacreepertrail.com/ is also part of the Rails to Trails, but it was built along an old narrow gauge RR bed that winds about as much as White Top Laurel Creek does. It is about an hour's drive away, but it is definitely worth going to as it is much more scenic.

Just two biking suggestions - I'm sure that there are more bike trails in the area.

Can't wait for warm weather. This will be fun.

Andrea,
A nice smooth easy ride is what I was thinking about. We are not into "The River Wild" thing. We have a 8' plywood prim, row/sail boat that I am trying to re-store. Am going to put glass/epoxy on the outside and epoxy on the inside, however it is only 1/4 plywood and was built by my father in 1960, so really don't want to subject it to rocks.

Unless it was one of those really wide flat bottom canoes, don't think I could get Linda into one, she don't even like bass boats!

Yep, that's my whole summer for the most part. A friend of mine has a sprint car and we spend at least one night a weekend at a track somewhere. I'm pretty much the pitcrew and push-truck (I supply the quad) Most of our tracks don't send the push trucks into the pits anymore to get the cars, just to push them off at the gate so we have to get them there, it can be really tough if you don't have a quad. Besides, it saves a lot of walking, hehe. Nothing like the smell of alcohol burning. I've been doing this for about 15 years now, he had a bigblock V-8 modified when I started going then he bought the sprint about 6-7 years ago. It's an expensive hobby but it sure is fun!
