Hello All,

We are traveling from Wisconsin for the first big trip in "Our Little Tin Can" to Cape Hatteras. We noticed that three out of the four National Park Service campsites are non-reservable. The only one that is reservable is on Ocracoke Island which you can only get to by ferry. Should we make a reservation there just to be on the safe side or is there a good chance that other sites might be available since we will be arriving on a Thurs.? Any input would be greatly appeciated.

Thank you,

Laurie(and Greg)

Heya Guys!

Sure enough, the Hatteras state parks fill up rather quickly, especially during the summer months - but we've never missed finding a site in all the years we've traveled up the coast. Frisco and Oregon Inlet state sites tend to be the best options - there is Frisco Woods campground, which is private. And yes, I understand the desire to have a back-up plan! There's a nice KOA in Rodanthe, just up the coast ( capehatteraskoa.com ) as well as a small, family owned campground called BeachCombers (252) 928-4031 and an even smaller one called Teeter's just outside the village - (800) 705-5341.

Happy trails!

We took our teardrop on the ferry to Ocracoke, camped w/o reservation easily, and then had a great site w/o resv at the Frisco campground on Hatteras, in June 2008. A mosquito net to drape across open cabin doors makes for great sleeping out there! Enjoy!

Thank you both for your help. We just got back from the shake down trip in the new teardrop and are eagerly looking forward to the outer banks. Thanks again,
