Wolfgang's 2&2 built updated December 25, 2010

Postby Wolfgang92025 » Fri Mar 13, 2009 10:29 pm

Well, decided to do my part to get the economy going again.
After looking for the last 8 months, I'm building the 2&2 body design with the inside changed to meet the Misses requirements. Mainly a space for a porty potty.
Cut out a template to see if I like a couple months ago. I like it a lot, not too big, not too small.(':D')

Image

Ordered a axle, turned out to be a pain. hole process ended up taking about 6 weeks, but I finally got it. Decided to go electric brakes. Living in the big city, never know when you will have to stop on a dime.
Got the steel for the frame last week and cut it to the spec from the design library (worked out great). Set up the frame on saw horses to make it easier to weld. Made sure it is level.

Image

My next door neighbor volunteered to weld the frame for me. Made a good start. Will finish welding it next Wednesday, his next free night.

Thanks Jim.

Looking to build similar 2+2

Postby danlott » Fri Mar 13, 2009 11:35 pm

My first replay/post here. I too am planning to build a 2+2 high version from the design library. I also am planning on changing the layout some to include a porta potti. Have you figured out the new layout yet?

Dan,

First Welcome to the Forum.

I have some drawings on my work computer. I used VISO, since I know how do use it, vs other CAD programs. Will try to post drawing Monday.

Jim

I'm watching with great interest. I love that profile and was wondering how to get a PP in there for the wife. Please keep us posted.

Thanks

It would be easy to add a pp in there if you use the layout I have in the Giant Teardrop...

But that raises a question. Were you building the 2+2 to have sleeping room for two kids as well? And are you building the 4' high version or the 5' high version? Your profile looks like the 4' version.

Mike,

I'm building the 2&2 high for the space only. No kids, just a couple of dogs and they will want to sleep on the bed just like they do now when we go camping.
The profile is 5' tall. It would have been to short for a porty potty inside with the four foot design.

Here is the side view of my version of the 2&2 high.

And top view

I made it about 6" shorter in width and added some fenders. I like the look of it better than the original design.

Lay out

Postby danlott » Tue Mar 17, 2009 9:53 am

Wow you really did change the layout a lot.

In mine I do need the space for the wife, 2 kids and myself. I have come up will a layout that I believe will work very well and still have room for a porta potti.

Are you planning on insulating the floor or sidewalls?

Dan,

Yea, it's just me , the wife and a couple of 20 to 30 lb dogs. That allowed me to change the design a lot. Plan is to have 1 1/2" on the floor and 1" insulation for the sides and top.

Finally got to work some more on the trailer this weekend.
Neighbor finished welding the frame for me Saturday.

Sunday, put a coat of primer on in the morning and painted the frame red in the afternoon.

Even have my little helper Nattie looking at my work.

Next come building a sandwich floor with insulation in the middle.
Could not help but buy a new toy to make things go easier.

:) :) :)

Glad to see you are making some progress. Where did you get your axle from and why did you have so much trouble getting it?

Dan,
I used a local supplier for Dexter axle I got of the internet.
Left work early to give them the spec and to make sure there were no questions. He said he would call me with a price in a few days.

I called them after a week. He could not get a quoted price from Dexter, said the sales rep was not good at returning calls. Called again 3 days later. Still no quote.
He said they also sold Alko axles and he could get them in 2 to 3 weeks.
Spend a couple of days thinking about it and asked for a quote.
Got it the next day and placed the order. The axle was coming out of Los Angeles, and they had a truck make pick-ups every Wednesday.

Called after two weeks, nope..... one more week.
Called one week later (so its now 3 weeks), no axle.
He calls the factory, they can't find the order.
Two weeks later I finally got the axle.

So the hole thing took 6 to 7 weeks.

I decide this build I will just not push to get things in a hurry. It will get done in its own time. Years from now I'm sure it will not make a difference if it takes me a couple month longer than what I had thought.

Ordered CPES last Thursday. Should be here later this week, but since we are going to the Dam Gathering, I won't get to work on the trailer for a week. Hope I won't go through withdrawal
