Best place to mount Spare Tire?

Postby Clipper » Wed Dec 29, 2010 7:43 pm

If the tongue gets crowded with a box plus a battery box ahead of that where do most people mount the spare?

Underneath the galley, hinged bracket would be one possibility.

Underneath the bed would be another...

I'm sure you'll get a lot of ideas on this. As for me, I wanted to get by without much cost so I mounted a shelf under the galley at the rear of the TD. I just slide the spare in, and, yes those are huge zip ties that hold the spare in place on the shelf. A very sturdy, effective and inexpensive solution.

Good Luck,
Mike

Toolbox of the truck for me and I keep it mounted on a spare hub. Something I picked up from pulling my boats.

Timely post......

Went to the boys at " Muff's and Tails" on Saturday and had 6 feet of 2" tail pipe stock bent for the swing away continental kit to table accessory.

I have the knee action flip up / flip down tire holder designed. Waiting on my buddy and co-worker Steve to help me weld it all up. My goal is to have it fully functional by the Crossroads of America Gathering this summer.

Here are a few shots of Marge's again for the newbies.

As my TD is high off the ground I mounted mine under the tongue just in front of the foot well I built. I have seen some with it mounted on the side of the TD just above the road wheel.

Yours looks good, but I've just sloppily put my spare above the fender. I need to repair my undercarriage hold.

How do you keep it from being purloined?

I haven't worried about someone stealing it.

I think a simple cable lock would work.

My trailer originally had the spare mounted underneath in front of the axle, but upon finding that my tongue weight was close to the max I placed the spare on the 2" receiver I had welded to the back of the trailer. This has made a noticeable difference in how the trailer tracks. I know of several people who have had their spare, battery and other things attached to the tongue who found out that was way to much weight. What are you planning on hauling inside your trailer and where are you going to put it. Use the spare's location to balance out the trailer properly. Most spares and batterys weigh a substantial amount and their locations can make a big difference on how your trailer pulls.
