CAMP CHEF STOVE/OVEN ON SALE AT COSTCO

Postby Jerry Bleeg » Thu Jul 18, 2013 4:57 pm

I was just at Costco in San Jose, and they had the Camp Chef Stove / Oven on sale at right around 130.00. They normally go for 169.00, and are 40.00 off. I think they closing them out for the season. Many builders on this forum including myself have used this in their tear drop builds. Personally, I like having the oven to do light baking, and for keeping food warm. The cooktop is OK. I have used better Campstoves, but it works pretty good.

There was recently a heated discussion over on the FiberglassRV forum about whether these should be used inside a trailer.

What was the outcome of the discussion?

The general opinion seemed to be that they are intended for outdoor use due to clearance recommendations because of heat. A couple people claimed they were using it inside with no problems. It was quite an opinionated discussion, and after that thread had died out for awhile someone mentioned seeing it on sale and the discussion started again. :? . Only thing I can say is READ Directions, I don't have or want one, so have no opinion myself. However we do know a lady that has one , uses it outside, and likes it.

Here's a diagram of the 30" minimum clearance for a stove and wood cabinet, without a vent.

I feel it would also apply to the galley lid of a teardrop.
My lid is 32" from the cook top of my Camp Chef stove/oven combination.
See my signature photo below.
Since it slides out I feel it's in an outdoor situation and no fumes will build up on the interior.
We allow it to cool before returning it into the storage position.
We haven't had any problems since my first one in 2006.
I use Image on the galley lid because of the moisture & temperature changes from cooking.

Nice setup Danny, you certainly know how to use it properly. The discussion I'm referring to was more based on the situation of permantly installing this stove/ oven inside a small fiberglass camper like a Scamp where there would not be adequate side or rear clearances. I'm not trying to stir up a hornets nest here, but want to point out a possible hazard.

My Galley is set up much like Danny's with the Camp Chef on a pull out slide on the one side and a cooler on the other. If one is in the planning stages, It's really nice to pick up your appliances and coolers before stating, and build your Galley around the appliances. This allows for the best fit of the appliance with the least wasted room. I bought my Stove and cooler both at Costco and was not able to install them for months during the build. But having them there for fitment saved me from costly do overs, and changes.
My stove will only work while the stove is slid out and the lid up and I have no issues with clearances. But I agree, running any kind of stove inside a small closed trailer like a scamp, is asking for trouble. There is no substitute for common sense.

I don't cook much when I camp (I hate the cleanup) but I've always liked the look of similar units from Mexico. There's just something retro looking about them. Someone on this site has one.
