Hot Rod II, The Annex

Postby Martiangod » Sun Nov 24, 2013 10:26 pm

Well this is more of a chop, hack and rebuild, high speed sort of.
Bought this old camperette
Referenced here http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=58116

Image

Was gonna use it the way it was for a quick trip, but,,,,hmmmm, I had to be me and can't leave anything alone.
Plus its in rough shape, I hated having to have the tailgate down and so on and so on....

So.....First order was cutting that bottom back so I could put an insulated floor under it

Image

so I made a frame 5/8 ply, 2x4 perimeter, 1/2 foil backed foam and a couple 2x4 Preasure treated skids, Lifted the capmer, pulled the skids out that I brought it home on, and slid the new sub-floor under the camper, set the camper down onto it and screwed away to make it one.

Now the plan...Oh ya, no plan, just winging it as always was to have the tailgate on the truck, with the back wall inside the gate so out came the sawzil....

Image

After notching it the tail gate closes fine, but the gates on the new truck are so thick and rounded Figured this would be functional but look like caca.

So I stabalized the wall and threw some turnbuckles on it so I could go home

Image

If nothing else, I'm really good at making a big mess

Image

That was the end of day 1, and I made it home for supper about 8pm

Stewed all night about the large gap and the box not looking right on the new truck, hardley slept thinking how to over come this.
Quick breakfast and back to the shop. By the time I got there I had to jump right to it, No time to waste cause it needs to be drivable at the end of each day.
So I took off the steel roof rack, roof is good and solid, walked all the 2x2 rafters and it held my 200 plus, and the one known leak in the roof was do to the roof rack, once the roofrack was gone i pealed the siding roadside and started cutting and fitting, sorry no pics of what transpired as I was working and the documentery crew never showed.
Framing on the roadside was in great shape, threw in a couple fillers where I needed them and framed the back corners up. my odds and ends of composite signboard were not high enuff so I reused the top course of siding after a dose of black paint.

Image

What I did at the back was to build out the back corners over the tailgate with a radius corner mimicking the tailgate.

Image

I think its coming out how I enveisioned it

Still thinking about the top corner, may resess some spot lights in.

Gotta think on that.

Dang $50 dollar camper is up to about $190 already, and its only been 2 days :frightened:

Curb side will be a whole nother story, I have some rot over there to deal with. But I think tomorrow will start with a shop cleanup....It needs it

Turning into a disaster...
$50 bucks huh?
More the half of it is in the gqrbage, but hey, got some windows guess they,re worth $50
. Top half in decent condition, everthing below the box sides has
been ripped out, its turning into a topper instead of a camper
Thinkin he should have paid me to take it away
Wont be much old about it when / if done

Well, here's where she stands now, just waiting for it to warm up and the frost to come off it
Kinda liking the round corners, Kinda a vintage feel to it.
Now I want to build another trailer, using the round corners on the front and maybe a boat-tail at the back
Something around 22 to 24 feet standy

Today was rebuild the front wall...What a bargain this was...lol

Lift and slide it back so I had room to work, formed up a new cross brace, bottom rail, reframed the window, the rest was not bad, threw in some 1 1/2" foiled foam
Put her all back together some boxliner spray and some more of that expensive aluminum trim and shes good to go

Image

Image

Image

Put down a double layer of foam tape and positioned it.
Think I'm gonna break down and drill and bolt to the truck, I have never trusted clamps.
So I guess tomorrow will finish up the back of the roof and trim
cut and shape the top wrapped aluminum band on the curve above the red and |I think gonna pull the windows and paint the frames with the box liner spray
then its onto the back wall and door.
Guess when \I'm done will have about $400 into it, can't buy a topper for that, and no one else will have one....or want one...

Well day 6 and the back wall is up

Image

Got a nice tight seal all around, can't see any light anywhere

Image

With the tailgate closed there is about an 1/8" between the door and tailgate

Image

Just have to finish up the back roof edge and its weathertight.

Definatly not going to be campable for a cross country run in the winter, yet.
I did have the trailer on today, took it to the shop to prepare it, height is almost right a match with the trailer being a couple inches at most above the truck camper.
Wife thinks it looks awesome, I'm thinkin its a little busy looking., oh well
For camping though, should almost double our available space
So far have maybe $350 into it
If it ain't broke, fix it till it is

Black out all of the aluminum and it will calm it down, making the "theme" work much better.

I wanna black out the AL "BUT" I Have a wife to contend with, she likes the AL....:(
Box linered the inside of the topper.
Reused the cooler, built in just inside the door

Image

Blacked the outer frame on the windows

Image

and added a stripe

Image

Gonna be sort of a camp support unit to compliment the HotRod.

Just have to make a cabinet on the roadside inside the door to hold stuff, and maybe a cross box up front to hold more stuff

Hate having things rolling around in back of truck
Guess it could be my doghouse when we're camping....
