Grumman 2 w/o inset wheels?

Postby Watercamper » Wed Mar 12, 2014 1:03 pm

The Grumman 2 design in the Design Resources is such that the wheels are inset into the interior and bed space is lost. Is this purely an aesthetic inset or could the wheels easily be placed outside the walls?

wheels outside the tear cause drag, and make towing a bit more of a challenge, those wider wheels are easy to forget about and catch on a tree or building. (most people who drive a dually pick up truck know this or learn it the hard way)
Wheels inside the tear take away a tiny bit of bed room, room that you won't ever need unless you are wider at the knees than at the shoulders. your waist should be even with the door lying down, the wheel wells fall at about your knees.

this is a very common bed design for boats, tucked into the bow and called a V-berth. As with most things on a boat, space is at a premium, tucking the bed in like this doesn't waste any space. the human body is normally widest at the shoulders, for some that might be the waist, but from there down the body tapers fast, tucking the narrow end of the body into the narrow end of the boat is a big win for space savings. Many people have lived and sailed around the world with a bed just like this.
The foot of the bed in my tear is below the wheel wells, the space near the wall is full width, it makes a great storage space, as I don't need that much foot room.

For a different perspective, if I ever run something into the outboard wheels and fenders, them I've probably smashed the sides of my truck too. Needless to say, it has never been a problem.

Regarding width, I am a side sleeper so, on my side, my widest position is around my knees. Inboard wheels that protrude into the cabin would seriously impact the roominess of of our teardrop.

I'll concede that for smaller cars there is a very minor increase in drag, but the width of my truck makes any drag increase negligible.
