Our latestest build - Temple, TX

Postby TxDave » Sun May 17, 2015 12:04 am

We're almost finished with our newest trailer. We went for a sort of modern retro look. This is the first time we have made our own doors, having previously used prefabbed ones. I welded the frame from 2x2" square tubing and added a storage area over the A-frame. The spare is stored under the front of the camper shell. This one has an air conditioner mounted in a vented aluminum lined box in the galley area. Using two different colors of aluminum to skin the walls was a little challenging, but it turned out pretty nice, I think.

Thanks folks. I'll put together a build journal soon. Just been too busy to post any pics. The frame features a fold-down cradle for the spare tire, and a storage shelf on the front A frame. All of the bulkheads and cabinets were installed using dado joints. My "temporary spars" keep everything aligned during assembly. Close-up shot shows the T molding around the door and the door handle.

Nice. When you post your build journal it would be great to understand your design choices. For example, you chose leaf spring axles as opposed to torsion axle, why? How did you choose where to put the spare tire and how does it impact your weight distribution? How did you determine axle placement?

Thanks for the pics, it is a nice looking trailer.

Thanks for the kind words, folks. Just about got this one finished. Managed to get a nice snug fit on the galley hatch. The hatch frame is welded 1/2" square steel tubing. If it will ever stop raining here in Central Texas we'll take it out for a trial campout.

I did my second teardrop frame in 1/2 square tubing. When people think of metal and welding they tend to go over the top and forget the strength that is gained once it is welded together! I like how you did the two sheet of aluminum and overlapped and covered with trim, this is a neat way to do it!

Got the gas struts for the galley hatch installed. Not as difficult as I had anticipated.

I assume the only hard part about it was locating the mounting positions, right? What method did you use?

I used a very elaborate high-tech method to determine the proper mounting location. I propped the hatch open at the height I wanted with a 2x4. Then I attached the strut to the hatch frame and then to the galley wall. Ended up having to move the upper attachment point about 2" closer to the hinge which worked out perfect. So, basically, just pure dumb luck. Sometimes things just work out despite my ignorance.
