I like the idea of a "sacrificial" piece of material over the first 18 inches or so of the awning starting at the attachment rail up top. When it rolls up, it will be the outside cover to absorb all the uV's, but not be integral to the awning function or shear strength. I am going to work on that idea. Thanks.McDave wrote:On the "Carefree" type awnings I have seen where the first 18" or so from the roller was made of aluminium slats. Sorta like a venetian blind so when the roller is all the way up the vinyl is wrapped in a layer of aluminium slats. Also I have seen aluminium covers that the roller tucks into. They have a hinged lid and some type of latch I would guess. Of course there is the split convoluted pipe that hides the roller. And then there is a vinyl strip that is adhered to the vinyl and protects the material on the outside of the roll. You guys may want to work a 2 part solution, Like the split pipe for now while you find a clever way to mimic the hinged box or some other solution. The split pipe wouldn't be a major investment and if it helped or solved the issue, then Bob's your uncle. If not, no biggie. I remember getting advice from spotman about the pipe. he said it worked well. See if you can get his wisdom.
