The thinning is to allow penetration / soaking into the canvas.
It does not help, only hurts adhesion strength. NBD for the canvas application, but not a good idea IMO for any other where more strength is required.
IOW, for maximum strength with TB, unthinned is best.

Glidden Gripper gets rave reviews for laminating sheets, wood to foam.
Roughing up the foam to take off the factory release layer, even putting in a lot of small holes with a spiky roller,
combined with an even stronger glue would be, well, even stronger.
Gorilla Glue Construction adhesive may well be overkill for laminating sheets, but apparently is the strongest adhesive for foam-to-foam, and especially useful at stressed edges and corners.
