T4,

How did you treat all those cuts against water and sand/dirt/stone damage. I used herculon bed liner on my metal fenders - keeps out water between the fender and sidewall and cuts down on noise.

I have not installed or sealed them yet. When I do I will most likely use Flex Seal on the wood and then the wheel wells will be covered in .040 aluminum.

You are welcome. Perform lots of tests before you commit to using expensive lumber. Reaching your desired radius and having all the kerfs closed down to nice sealed triangles can be a challenge.

The wood will be sealed on all sides. The wheel side of the fender will be covered in Flex Seal and then .040 aluminum.

Not much progress being made over the past few weeks due to some health issues. I have made some advancements in support systems. I needed to move the operation inside so we purchased a 12 x 20 x 8 carport. I also made a trip alarm since I live in an area that warrants the protection.

Hopefully construction will continue soon.

The Tiny Tillson Teardrop Trailer (T4)

Postby BLTillson » Wed Feb 09, 2022 10:12 am

I have finally been able to get back to work on the project. Here are some of the highlights of the progress I have made.

First was the completion of the tank cradle. It is only going to be an 11 gallon tank, however, that is 91 pounds full and will be the lowest part of the camper and closest to the road. It will also be covered with .040 aluminum.

Next I installed the water tank box. I will not be installing the water tank and pumping system with the initial build due to cost. With rising costs on everything the whole water system is too expensive. Should have bought it all back in 2020.

It feel really great to be back to work on this. We hope to have it done for a vacation in September.

The Tiny Tillson Teardrop Trailer (T4)

Postby BLTillson » Wed Feb 09, 2022 10:25 am

Sealed the bottom of the trailer with Flex Seal. This is the first coat. Once I have cut out the fender wells and made sure that all fits I will put on a second coat before attaching the floor to the trailer. That will be a great day.

Finally made the critical cuts into the floor for the fenders. I have been working toward this part with great anticipation. The underside of the fender wells and the side walls will be covered with .040 aircraft aluminum. I was concerned about the tire clearance. What do you think? I have figured out how I would increase the clearance but it would be a bunch of work (rework). I will be performing some weight test along the way.

Lord willing I will be able to keep up the current pace on this wonderful project.

when you realize you need to remove seal flex nylon wire wheel works the best . At shop that is the main reason we see floor rot out

I was concerned about the tire clearance. What do you think?

For a Dexter torsion axle, I build in 4" of clearance. And that's before I add the cabin (weight) to the chassis.

 It's pretty cool how you've done it.

Thank you Tony. I spent a long time in SketchUp working on that design. When I get back out to the project I will measure. I think I am maybe at 4", possibly 3". This is the time to fix it before I go further. I have done lots of woodworking but nothing that had to move down the highway!

Thank you for that advice. I am impressed already with how tough Flex Seal is. Once the floor is attached to the trailer for good I will flip the trailer and do all the fill in work and make sure it's sealed tight.

Are you saying Flex Seal causes floor rot?

Yes you can get Nicks and scrapes and scratches . that will let water get in and be absorbed by the plywood. even condensation in the pores of the plywood . Can't dry out your start getting little bit and lift in plywood . more water. Most of the trailers that have rot that don't have leaks from above it's because they have sealed the bottom of the floor

So you think the floor should be left raw timber underneath?
