Front Jack-Need some Advice

Postby Capebuild » Thu Nov 25, 2021 10:02 am

Hello... and Happy Holiday to all!!

I need a little help with some specs and advice on a front jack. I first installed a jack with a flat plate bottom and after some time of living with it during my build decided I'd rather have a jack with a wheel. I just received a Curt jack # 28115 which has an 8" wheel, stands 27" tall and has a load capacity of 1500#s tongue weight. The load capacity is probably way overkill but I liked the 8" wheel. I think it looks kind of huge when temporarily attached to the trailer (images attached). So I've been looking at 2 other Curt jacks (Model #28112 with 6 inch wheel, 1200#load capacity and stands 23 inches tall and the Model# 28101 also with a six inch wheel, a load capacity of 1,000#s and 23 inches tall.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. One question will there be much of a difference moving the trailer around with a 6 inch vs an 8 inch wheel. I'd like to go with a smaller jack, but I'm looking for other's thoughts on that. Again, images attached of the jack with the 8 inch wheel attached.

Thanks very much for the help.

John

another option is convert your old one to have the bottom come off and you can do either a flat plate or wheel. There are plenty of DIY videos on you tube for that.

Since your building a Vistabule clone, you might want to look at their fancy-pants ratcheting jack.

Cosmo has it in his new factory video:

Like this... with your welding experience you might be able to build one yourself.

I built one of those. It was really easy, and I wouldn't be without it for moving my boat.
They are cheap to buy though. I really only built my own so I could have a much lower tow ball height as my boat only just fits under the shed door.

Thanks for the replies. The tongue dolly idea mentioned looks interesting for moving the trailer around, but probably not that practical to "take on the road". My original post was more concerned with whether an 8 inch wheel would provide for more easily moving the trailer around than say a 6 inch wheel. I watched Cosmo's new video he just posted which Tony mentioned.... That jack shown has a 10 inch wheel (the ratcheting system doesn't do too much for me) but definitely a nice jack (pretty pricey). Guess I'll have to ponder this a bit..... thanks again!

this old fat man is a real fan of having the option PAD/WHEEL

the larger the wheel the easier it rolls over ruff ground

I have found it's really nice to have a wheel that turns the direction you want to go

Decided to go with the new Curt jack with 8 inch wheel I had gotten. Works nicely moving the trailer around the shop and I think the 8 inch wheel will work well in the grass, gravel, ground, as well.

Poking around in some older posts. I never saw this exchange as I was in a coma in the hospital with the co-vid and a ventilator tube down my throat.
:frightened:

I think you'll find you made a good choice here, John. Just be sure to keep that wheel lubed up. A nice big one up front does make it easier to muscle the thing around after you've unhitched.

Speaking of good choices... When you first started getting REALLY busy with things I noticed you jumped off of your build thread and asked all these questions in their own separate thread, and there turned out to be a LOT of them. The first couple I noticed and thought... hmmm, that's an odd way to do things. It turned out to be a great way. There are build threads on here that have gone well past 100 pages and if you want to go look up something you might have thought you maybe remembered seeing... somewhere. Well, good luck with that!

Another fine choice, John!

I got a Curt with 10" of lift with the foot, it's what was available. I plan on cutting it off and getting a 6" wheel and be able to switch them out, Curt sells the wheels with a locking pin, I think they only fit 2" tube size .
I'll be done when I'm finished, if that's not fast enough, take a number.
