I notice I am not the only one to use his outdoor furniture for more noble pursuits.

Today was incredibly sunny, so a great day to put the garden furniture to good use…

It was a very dusty day, all the recesses were routed out so both the walls are ready to be installed once the floor is ready. Floor is awaiting the arrival of a new sheet of plywood in the correct thickness.

Tomorrow I am taking my motorcycle for a spin. So for now this is it.

Today I got a lot done.

Drilled all the holes to mount the floor. Also drilled some extra holes in the chassis for a perfect fit. Somehow I worked very precise, all 14 bolts simply drop in. I also added some extra wood to the floor where the bolts come through the floor.


Cut all the insulation to size and glued it in.



Then I fitted the 6mm poplar sheet on top of the floor. Since it will be invisible I glued and screwed the sheets. The EPS is also glued to the top sheet of ply. Also created slots for the bolts to be flush with the floor.




The moment the walls will be mounted comes closer every day….



Turned the floor over and repaired some screw holes and screwups with epoxy. After some sanding I will paint the floor with a black coating and seal the sides of the plywood of floor and walls with a special sealer.

Now its time to chill…

Applied two coats of some black stuff that is normally used for boats. Its an alternative to tar that is no longer allowed to be used for this purpose. Should provide protection to the underside of Droppie.

Another day in droppie land!

Sanded the top of the floor…


And applied the first coat. Where the mattress goes I used transparent coat of whats called Armourstain. Its transparent but turned out a bit yellow. The galley got a transparent base coat, it is absolutely clear and really brings out the character of the wood. We love it, but the following coats wil add a bit more white. We are going for a beach/Scandinavian look.











The holes I made to fix the floor to the chassis were a bit deepened to make room for caps to cover the holes.

Productive day…. Very productive day.


Wall number one is up…











Tomorrow I will continue work on the galley an fabricate the two other cabinets in the sleeping compartment.

And one of the benefits of being very tall is that our kitchen area will be 106cm high and can accommodate a fridge with a capacity of 85 liters!

Today I worked on the cabinets in the sleeping area and the galley.

I am quite pleased with the progress I made today.

Last week we decided to give our build a proper place to stay, and we placed her under a party tent. That turned out to be a good decision since we had massive rainfall the past few days. A supercell visited my hometown. Our build stayed dry and with the aid of some concrete blocks the tent did not flinch.



The cabinets for the sleeping area were build. Tomorrow they will be permanently fixed.


Number two…

Also started the cabinets in the galley. Everything is mocked up temporarily, I have to add the conduit for the cables.

The fridge fits perfect!





The sliding doors were fabricated and temporarily fitted. The countertop will be covered with 1.5mm aluminium that I can now order.

Tomorrow I plan to finish all the cabinets in the galley and I was planning the mock-up of the electrical stuff. Unfortunately my battery (lifepo4, 105ah) arrived with a broken cover so I had to send it back.

Another busy day. Managed to complete several tasks despite logistical activities with the kids (swimming lessons and supping) and having to entertain and feed the kids.


Fitted the cabinets in the sleeping area.


Added the last pieces to the cabinets in the galley.


Built a drawer for the furnace. To create some extra space, the stove can be pulled out of the drawer to create even more room. Stole that idea browsing other galley layouts. The blue knobs are for the integrated locking mechanism. The drawer schould be able to be loaded to a maximum of 120kilo, so bring on that sirloin steak!




I will have to figure out how to position the gas tank and hose.

Today I glued everything in in the galley . Happy with the result although next time I will do it differently.




SketchUp said: 1510mm wide, 14.5degrees. Fits like a glove…




Cut the hole out for the sink and fitted the tap for cold water. Took it out again since the worktop will be covered with aluminium.

Now the worst part of the job: sanding and painting. When that’s finished the roof is my next project.
