Wheel hold water in tire carrier

I mounted my spare under the frame...I wanted it in back and out of the way. The wheels are 205/75-15 on Allied chrome smoothies with baby moons.

After looking at it, I became concerned that if water spashed in, it wouldn't drain. So I poured in a cup of water to check, sure enough, the water just sits there...

I have 1/2 inch clearance between the tire and the bottom of the trailer floor, so I could make a cover....

Sooooo...it doesn't seem like a good deal to put that spare in a situation where it will collect water. Would it be better to drill a couple small drain holes through the rim so the water would drain? Or would it be better to make a cover to keep the water out? Or am I barking up the wrong tree and mounting the spare like that was stupid?

If it was me I wouldnt drill any holes...rust is one thing. How about an aluminum or fiberglass cover that could be easily removed if needed?

Thats one thing Im thinking of .. I also have the Smoothie Rims ... :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

I was looking at the possiblity to have the spare mounted on the back of the Galley Hatch but then it would be in the way all the time...Would look sort of nice though with a Spare tire cover of either vinyl or fiberglass...or :thinking: A Continental Kit???

I wonder if you had to put the tire there and you thought it was going to
collect water you could cover the tire with plastic and have like some
thing that would make the center high so the water would run off. Maybe
some duck tape to hold the plastic / garbage bag would help? That way the
tire would stay clean for when and if you wanted to use it?

That is if you have to store your tire there? Heaven knows uP on your roads
a spare tire is a prudent investment and should be hauled around.

As for your idea, Heikki, didn't someone post pics with a rear mounted spare that converted into a serving table?

How about flipping the tire over and keeping the hub cap in the tow vehicle or don't carry the spare hub cap at all. Can't use 3 on a 2 wheeled teardrop. That's what I did with mine and I bought a donut spare at the yunk yard ( in T.J. Mexico they are Yunk Yards) for more clearance and less weight. The original spare sits in the garage. :) Danny

Dave, From your photos and admission of a 1/2" clearance how are you going to get that tire out of it's storage position? It appears that one half inch won't allow it to arc downward with that piece of steel under it. Now a donut tire might clear it. :D Danny

Well...it fits ok and the arc is such that it slides down without hitting anything so I can get it out...I tried it before I welded it up, and made sure I could get the baby moon off. Good idea to leave the third hubcap at home though. You know...I wouldn't even be concerned except...I've had two trucks with the tire mounted underneath, and both were terrible to get the tire out in an emergency because of rust. Secondly, Juneau is right on the ocean and it rains all the time. I don't even think I would worry if I lived in a drier climate.

After looking at it, I don't think it would gather a lot of water. Maybe a simple cover would be the best?

Is it possible to fit a bike inter tube between the tire and floor to seal that 1/2" space :thinking:

I think if you did seal the tire to the bottom, it may not be vapor tight and any moisture that did get in would eat away at everything in that space. I don't think you'll get that much up in there but if you did put a drain hole you could seal the hole with a carefull application of paint around the hole. The spare on my pickup collects a little water but it dries out because of the air circulation.

Whoops!!!! I like the keep it simple but with at a zero offsett +-, you have a 2.5 inch deep moat floating the base of the bb moon.
