Epoxy and Vinyl

Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

Postby Darren » Sun Jan 14, 2007 2:47 pm

Hi Ed,

I didn't use any adhesive on my vinyl roof. I stretched and stapled around the edges. I did quite a bit of testing when I got he vinyl and as long as the the surface is intact it's very waterproof.

I just got the trim installed yesterday. I cut the vinyl back about a quarter of an inch from the edges and sealed with silicone. Once that was dry I put down another bead of sililone and installed the trim.

I spent a lot of time polishing the trim before I installed it.

Hope this helps.

neal - Did you get the Riviera vinyl? It's really nice and the price is great. If you don't have a good staple gun now's the time to pick one up, get lots of staples also.

I have an old crummy electric one. I spent a lot of time hammering staples down.

Thanks. I got a buffing wheel at Home Depot and put it on my grinder. HD has some polishing compound for alunimum that works great. Once you get the pieces polished they are covered in black crap, Aluminum Oxide I believe. WD40 takes that off easily and then you can polish it out with a soft rag. Here's how the hinge polished out.

Not that mine looks the best, but it is holding so far. I used Marine vinyl all across in one sheet. It is stapled down all along. I then trimmed it with a piece of z edge glued down on the vinyl using Goop. I had no luck getting Contact Cement to stick to the vinyl, but the Goop is great. I wish I knew about it when I started. In fact, I am considering ripping off my vinyl and starting over with it on both sides. Just my two cents...

I know!!!!!

A topic that I have practical use on!!! I have a 65 Chris Craft Super Sport that I did some restoration on about 7 years ago. Pulled the old vinyl off the foward deck. Cleaned off the old glue. West epoxied the deck and sanded smooth. Used the marine vinyl and contact adhesive, stapled the edges as before (monel staples) put on the trim and it still looks like new. Used the spray adhesive from 3M and followed the directions on the can. No shrinkage to the vinyl and no lifting. Hope it helps. Les

Victor,

I used this link, but it took me to the site's home page. I noticed no one has asked which thickness of vinyl you used. I see on the web site you referenced that these vinyl sheets come in a variety of thicknesses. Did you use the 5/32"?.

I'm not sure what the thickness is, sorry. It looks like they sold out of the Rivera vinyl. It's not on the closeouts page any longer.

Thanks Finn.
