Analog to Digital

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Analog to Digital

Postby Classic Finn » Mon Aug 27, 2007 12:35 pm

Well looks like the Analog Broadcasts will be history here in Finland.

This Saturday all Analog Broadcasts will stop in Antenna Households or Cable as ours is will be changed to Digital in December.

So now people are rushing to the nearest Tv Shops to purchase Digital receivers if they arent willing to purchase new Tv,s with such capabilites.

Gee these shops are making money with this..

We,ll have to make a decision by December.

How is this in The States or Canada

You'll notice absolutely no difference in the quality.

Until you/they go to High Def, it's all high BS.

April 7, 2009, analog TV goes away in the states. After that you will have to have a digital convertor, cable or satellite. :(

Basically, whatever happens in Yurip this year, will come to Merka in five-to-ten years.

You guys always seem to adopt new technologies pretty far ahead of us.

Uncle M,

Yes, analog tv goes away in 2009, but you have another option over digital converter, cable or satellite - digital over the air direct to a new, digital tv.

We currently receive over the air analog tv signals (really lousy reception here), the digital version of the standard broadcast (very crisp and clear) and the HD versions of over the air programs. I have to say, the NFL and NASCAR are superb in HD.

I also have to say that digital signals and HD broadcasts do absolutely nothing to improve upon lousy programs on the networks. Or golf.

Yesh, whassup with that?

Here, the airwaves are owned by the public, and TV broadcasters have to buy licenses to use OUR airwaves. Now, a certain political party tried to change that, with the son of a famous General leading the charge to give the airwaves to corporations, as they feel public ownership of anything is commie talk, but they failed.

So, for the time being, the corporations have to pay US, and not the opposite.

Hi there, No ignorance.. Here in Scandinavia we have to pay to watch Tv.
Actually its a permit of sorts..

And that is required of all Tv Owners wether 1 or 10 tv,s in the house to get it from the telecommunications office. The fee at the moment is 200 Euro and the plans are to raise the fees.

This pays for the different programs broadcasted ... and that also pays for the upkeep of the channels. And the government aslo gets their share.

Also there is no way of getting out if it either or saying you dont watch Tv or you dont have one or... excuses .

There are Tv license or permit inspectors that do random checks at your house.. and even if you dont answer.. they,ll come back again.. and besides that... they do have a machine of sorts to check if there are any signals coming out of your house.. Its an electrical device they use..

so they will get you ... and if you have a tv and its not paid you can get a heavy fine or and the tv can be confiscated by them as well..

This is throughout Scandinavia... Long ago they had the same for radio.. not anymore.. :)

So I hope you understand it a lil better now..

Sounds like the makings of a revolution there.
So you are saying that you can't just stick up an antenna and watch TV at all without paying this? I am amazed that they can enforce that.
I can see getting you for hooking up illegal cable but that's just nonsense.

That is Very True.. No way will you get away with it.. It is nonsense I agree..I hate it but ... Its all Scandinavia ... the same way... and what gets me is they have some idiot shows on most of the time.. just not even worth watching..

Oh so also on top of that .. Its Hbo and all these other sport channels and Discoivery and some other channels.. Pay Pay and Pay..

on top of the early charges also..

I find it more insteresting to build teardrops and go fishing or somthing.  Also I do Dx Radio listening also.. thats sort of fun..
and Im just starting to read up for my Ham Radio License here..

So then maybe I can get some equipment and contact some fellow teardrop folks there in the USA also.. 8) 8)

Next question.
Can you have a TV hooked up to a DVD player and no antenna without paying the license or is owning a TV all they require to have to get the license?
Inquiring minds wanna know. 8)

So, do you pay for service, AND have to suffer through advertising on TV?

Here, a lot of programing is paid for by advertisers, and to be honest, I'd pay $200 bucks a year to be rid of the ads. Advertising takes up 10 minutes of every 30 minutes of airtime on most stations.

Most of the programming here is lame, too. I watch mostly the cable/satellite channels, like Discovery, Travel Channel and FoodTV.

And don't get me started on commercial radio here. :x

No, you get to watch some TV with no adverts - and, man, do TV adverts stink when you know what life is like without them!

We have the same system here and are probably to blame for introducing it throughout Yurp - here it pays for the non-commercial BBC radio and TV service. It's a bit like having a compulsory donation to PBS!
