Work Interfering!

Postby Gerdo » Wed Sep 19, 2007 10:44 pm

Work is interfering with my personal life again. First off, I'm self employed in the film industry. If I'm not working I'm not getting paid. My job this weekend has pushed to next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Saturday is a travel day, from Aspen back to Denver but I'll drive home Friday night after work, should be done by sunset. The job pushed because the Aspen trees haven't changed colors yet. Thursday thru Sunday is "the last gasp" and we were planing on going Friday evening to Sunday. I also just got a phone call for another job back up in Aspen. It is a week long job starting on Monday with a travel up on Sunday. It will be alot of driving but I may be able to swing it. Oh yea, I may also have to fly to LA this Monday and drive a truck back.

Monday 24th-Fly to LA, 1000 mi
Tuesday 25th-Drive to Denver, 1000 mi
Wednesday 26th-Drive to Aspen, 170 mi
Thursday 27th-Film
Friday 28th-Film then drive to Denver, 170 mi
Saturday 29th-Drive to Canon City, 120 mi
Sunday 30th-Drive to Denver then drive a truck to Aspen, 290 mi
Monday 1st thru Friday 5th-Film
Friday or Saturday- Drive to Denver, 170 mi

1920 miles driven + 1000 miles flown not to mention the 7 days of filming, 10-16 hour days.

Sorry, just frustrated that I may have to cut the "last gasp" out so I'm not too exhausted to work.

Shelly,

OK, 12 - 14 hr days (6 days a week most weeks), not sleeping because of worries at work. Never a good word from the boss, just what's wrong (and I could do nothing about what he preceives is wrong). Just kept adding things to do, when I did not have time to do what I was already doing. And lots more things just like that!

Not sleeping at night and having no personal life was just not worth it!

Kerry...It sounds like you did what you had to do. I know it's hard not knowing what's next, but you have to do what's best.

Good luck!

Gerdo, I really feel for you. My son just started in the film industry. He has been working as On Set Dresser and Set Dresser in various productions here in Missouri. Sometimes the pay is great, :D sometimes it sucks.:( Sometimes he has to turn down jobs because he is already working and sometimes he sits on his behind waiting for another job. When he works he sometimes works 14 hours plus a day.

But, so far he loves it! :D

Sorry your plans are toast for the weekend. Hope things improve.
Rolling lightly upon the Earth,

Chuc

Kerry , I feel for ya man!! I did the same thing about 10 years ago when I was 42. I left a job after 23 years for much the same reasons. I had no job lined up , but found 1 several months later at 1/3 of the pay I was gettin. Now I'm back up to where I used to be in pay & really love my job. so it can work out for the best. Ya just gotta hang in there!!

Good luck!! ;)

Kerry,
I was there in '98. 20+ years and the boss called me to his office and just started in, again, so I reached in my pocket set the keys on his desk and said "See ya". Took a couple things from my desk and told him to keep the rest, went home to the wife (who was having a garage sale) and have never regretted taking my life back. I figure I have about 10,000 days left and I am not ever again worry about making someone else rich, it is all an illusion anyway.
The real wealth is in seeing a humming bird along the Mississippi River that can only be seen if one is quite still. Or meeting four young people that had the nerve to set out on a homemade raft from St Paul two months earlier with New Olreans as a goal. I gave them all my food and a set of longjohns and was thanked more graciously in that simple giving than for all the Saurdays I sacrificed to the 'Company'.

Gerdo live simply and plan an escape! There might not be a next year!
