SD Memory Card problem_Pics won't copy

Postby Geron » Tue Apr 29, 2008 12:40 pm

Hey Gurus,

I'm having difficulty copying my pics from my hard drive to a 1 and 2 GB SD memory card.

I've purchased two (USB) SD Memory card Reader/Writers and both give the same error. I now think it's something I'm doing wrong.

I can copy 50 to 100 MB of data to the card (using either Reader/Writer) and then get this error message.

"Cannot copy *.*: The Directory or File cannot be created."

When I check the Properties of the SD reader/writer drive it show plenty of unused space on the card.

Any Ideas? I'm stumped.

Edited: Oh, BTW, I did the plug/unplug to reset the driver and format the card routines.

I'm running XP, SP2.

I ran into the same issue. Try formatting the card. When you first put the card in the computer and the pop-up window appears, one of the options should be to format the card. If you do try this, you should know that anything you currently have on the card will be erased.

Formatting worked for me, and I haven't had a problem since. Hope it works for you.

Thanks AmyH,

I reformated several times.
The only way I can get more than 50-100 MB on the card is to copy folders rather than individual jpg's.

May be the best option but I'm not sure the "electronic photo displayer" we got for our 40th is moving from folder to folder to display the pics.

Try formatting it and then making one folder and put all the photos in that folder.

Did making a sub-folder work?
I had not heard of this...but did some quick research because I use SD cards all the time...turns out that this is a common issue with SD cards, one of those "it's not a bug, it's a feature" kind of things.
You can get that error when you try to copy files directly to the root of the card...making a folder and saving the files to that is supposed take care of it.

I"m dooing that right now. Let you know.

Yep! think that did it. Got almost 500 MB on 1 GB SD. Believe that was the problem.

Created a directory and seem the transfers are OK.

Thanks Kerry.

What OS are you using? Older versions of Windows have a file limit in the root directory of a drive.

Also, is the drive formatted as fat32? If it is, you have a file limit and/or a space limit in your root directory.

Thanks Mike,

Creating the directory instead of using the root directory seems to have solved the problem

Thanks everyone.
