Exactly. Why take the time to unscrew all the screws on the hinges when you could just pry the door open. It's not like our tear doors are built that solidly. Or break the window and reach in. I just like the option of lifting the doors off if I want. I just don't want to pay $40+ a hinge to do it. I wonder why Austin's prices on those hinges skyrocketed so much?

If you mount one up and one down, only one is supporting the weight of the door.

I'd put them both the same way so I could lift the door off if I wanted to.

I ordered some hinges from Austin's 3 months ago, before they remodeled their website. The hinges just showed up as they were on backorder. The website won't tell you about backorders, you don't find out about it until they mail an invoice, which BTW, they always mail an additional invoice even when they're paid via the website (I wonder how many people pay twice?). I paid $18/hinge and they are now $99/hinge on their website. I'm not buying anything from them anymore.

I just bought those "torpedo style" hinges from Austin Hardware a few weeks ago.

You have to call them using their 800 number and NOT the web site. The prices are wrong on the site and the order function was not working properly at all. When I called, I got a friendly "real, live person" and the price was $15.80 each. I had them delivered to my door in 2 days. They also sent me a full catalog .... a lot of fun to browse.

Hmm...I dunno...I'm building my trailer with security as the #2 requirement (being able to take off-road abuse is #1). If I thought someone could just easily break into it, I probably wouldn't bother building the trailer at all. Sure, I realize that if someone really wants my stuff, they're going to get it - eventually. But I'm not going to make it uber-easy for them.

Just put some epoxy on the screw head when you're done, you could still get them out if you took the time to file the epoxy away but a guy with just a screwdriver wont be able to get them out.

OK, hoping to have the same experience you did, I called Austin's local 800 number today and asked about the hinges. She asked if I had an account, I said "no". She said without an account it would be at the web price ($47). I asked if I opened an account would the price be different. She said if I opened an account as an individual then it would still be at the web price ($47). If I opened a business account (only if I was "in the trade") then the price would vary "depending on the account". Since my business is a veterinary clinic it isn't considered "in the trade". So my only option would be to order off the web or open an individual account which both would entitle me to buy the hinges at the amazingly low web price ($47). Looking above, it's surprising to read such different experiences with the same company. The hinges are nice and I like them but it just isn't worth the hassle.

I just ordered some last night. A pair for each door plus two extra LH pairs so I can do a removable A/C door.

If I were using the Austin 4 hole hinges, I would use 2 per side. But with those hinges, I was thinking 3 per side. Is that what you were planning too? Do they seem stout enough to hold the door?

I'm planing on 2 per door. The "extra" 2 are both lefts, to make an extra door to mount a small window shaker a/c unit for the hotter months.

DANG!!!! 8 inches from tip to hinge pin would be a third of my door!!! But it would look cool if I could find the style a wee bit smaller!!
