Simple (??) Hinge Question

Postby tinksdad » Sun Aug 03, 2008 9:49 pm

I know I should be able to figure this out by myself; but it doesn't hurt to look for the pros and cons from those who have gone before me. After all, it's the little details that make a quality build.

I am going to use a continuous piano hinge to mount my door. It will be on the outside face of the trailer. Before I add the hinge, I plan on using double sided tape and probably something similar to rip-stop nylon to make a liner between the hinge and the body.

I know it's a small detail; but my question is about hinge length and I hope I can explain it so it makes sense. My door has no curves or radii (square corners). What is the consensus on how long to cut the hinge? The actual length of the door, the length of the door opening (1/8" clearance around door) or extend just slightly larger than door opening? (I do plan on relieving the corners of the hinge no matter the length so there will be no sharp points)

Function wise, I dont think it would matter. I would do whatever works better with whatever type of edge trim (T moulding?) you plan on using around the door. I would extend the ends of the hinges past the edge of the door frame the same amount the edge trim extends. It would probaly make a cleaner joint by butting the edge trim up to the hinge as opposed to having the hinge end at the top of the door, then have to notch out the edge trim around it.
