Mississippi gathering

This is a cross post from what I just submitted to Tearjekers to reach out to more(?) people.

I apologize in advance if this becomes a long post.

If you have been following this thread, you are aware that "yours truly" will soon be the Director of the newly to be formed Magnolia Chapter (Magnolia = Mississippi). I appreciate everybody's welcome thus far and hope to be able to live up to what people expect of a director. I am assured that it's not that difficult; but I still have reservations of my own to contend with.

One of the first things I would like to accomplish is to set up Mississippi's first gathering. I could be wrong, but I am assuming that the first gathering will probably be on the smaller side; if only for the reason that people will be waiting to see what we have to offer. Right now, I don't know what we have to offer other than a similar liking for camping and teardrops. I will be towing my trailer to Bell Buckle, TN on Memorial Day weekend 2009; but that is for a totally unrelated event other than to have a place to lay my head at the end of the day.

Addressing the subject at hand; I have been looking at several sites for a gathering the latter part of February or early March 2009. The easiest thing would be for me to pick a location close to home; but to reach out to more prospective attendees, I am looking at central Mississippi. I've researched many of the state parks and COE camps in the area. I am kind of leaning towards Grand Gulf Military Monument SP between Vicksburg and Natchez. The dates are still up in the air because I don't want to conflict with any other gatherings all ready scheduled in this part of the country. Having only attended one other event myself thus far a couple weeks ago in Louisianna, I'm not sure what to schedule and what not to do. If any body has any suggestions or input, I would love to hear from you. Post here, PM me, or e-mail me at the [email protected] thingy.

Looking forward to crossing trails with one and all.

Jerry (aka tinksdad)

P.S. Would love to hear from any Mississippi tear owners or wannabes. I will gladly show off "Itty-Bitty" and discuss what I did right and wrong while building it. And what I plan on doing with #2, the "Paddy Wagon".

Image Jerry! I am sure you will do a successful job as director.

Personal opinion here---plan it and they will come. As long as you avoid the National or regional events you should be good to go. Remember that not everyone from Mississippi will make long trips and it is nice to have something closer. Looks like your area is inundated with wonderful places.

I stayed at Grand Gulf in October while attending the Phatwater Kayak Race on the Mississippi River......Grand place; pun intended. J ust remember that the Grand Gulf Nuclear Plant is a mile down the road and many sites are tied up by plant maintenance workers whenever there is a shutdown...call the park and check their schedule first thing.....

And for all who attend this: "Skeeter Repellant!" Lotsa water round there, and the skeeters were in clouds.......

Final Thought...THIS IS A GREAT PLACE FOR WHAT YOU HAVE PLANNED...NOW THAT I'VE BEEN THERE I WILL GO BACK.

if you travel to or through MS to attend I highly recommend the Natchez Trace Parkway......don't blast through the state, cruise the Parkway......
Keep thinking outside the box and all manner of ideas will become reality......

Grand Gulf didn't want to commit to an as yet undetermined amount of sites for a gathering. They had no problem with the gathering per se; they just wanted to know basically right now how many of their sites we would be occupying. I couldn't give them that information. Therefore; the first Mississippi gathering will be held a hundred or so miles distant from Grand Gulf. It's going to be at Hugh White SP near Grenada, MS. The park ranger lady said "Come on down!!" Still trying to get a consensus on the date. It's going to be either Feb28-March1 or March 7-8, 2009. Spring Fling or Kick Winter in the Butt Good-bye!!
